BigHoss, Redfish and King Ranch and I picked up a few quail and planted them for an afternoon hunt yesterday. The birds flew very well and we had a good hunt. We had my shorthair, Zydeco; Hoss's shorthair, Kai; and Redfish's lab, Jeter. My other shorthair didn't make the trip, because we had just got back from vacation. Jeter caught on quick and got in on the bird finding.

Looks like a great time. Side question...what are those thorns called in the third pic? They are all over our place. They usually drop yellow balls if I remember correctly

ag, I have a lot of those thorn trees in an area that I like to rabbit hunt....those are wild orange trees. they are often used as rootstock for domestic citrus, as they are much hardier and disease resistant than modern citrus.

the yellow balls are native citrus and are bitter as hell, but they do smell like citrus if you cut one.

ETA: beautiful pictures, wick...your threads always make me want to get a bird dog and start hunting upland birds...

One of my childhood buddies loved doing this and I went a few times, it was a blast.

Unfortunately he passed away about 4-5 years back.

If his ears aren't sticking out past the brim of the hat then that ain't Redfish wearing it...

What's the prominence of the pic with the board?

No wild quail, this is their deer lease in Woodville, but the land owner burns parts of the property from time to time and that helps all forms of wildlife

That board was in a creek about 8' off the ground and balancing, in the middle of the board, on that tree. I assume a flood put it up there, but the odds of it balancing on that tree have to be damn low...
