Not sure where to post this but new house has a gas water heater. Never installed a gas one before. Contemplating hiring someone to install it. Another reason is the area where the water heater is in is a bitch to get back to. In my other house it was real easy.

How much am I looking to get into for installation of a 50gal?

$800-900

My mom was going to have Lowes come install her water heater. Price was $450 and she had to get rid of it. Called her handyman and he did for $100 and got rid of it.

I paid a plumber $125 cash to install my last one, but it was easy to get to. I also had him install threaded copper fittings and the braided lines to make it a really easy diy if it needs to be changed in the future.

Where's the Best place to buy one? I need to get one and try to install it myself.

...how hard is it to install if it's up in the attic?

Lot of variables here. Are you replacing an existing gas WH? If not, you might need a gas line run. You will also need a vent that extends through the roof.

If you're just "unplugging" one and popping in another just like it I wouldn't think it should cost more than $400. I could absolutely be off by a lot though.

We had one go out two days before my wife had to have surgery. I got someone to come out and quote me to change it out (I had other things to worry about). They quoted $1350 because it had to be brought up to code first. I changed it myself the next day. Changing one out is not hard, watch a youtube video or three and do it yourself.

Remember, always check your lines before you introduce fire to the area. As matter of fact, double check.
