Hey OB,

I want to go out on a Tuna trip with some friends. Would like to get in to some Yellowfins (or whatever).

1) Day trip Vs. Night trip? Cost difference?

2) Leaving from NOLA, our preference would be Venice >> Grand Isle/Fourchon.

3) Best time to actually get in to the Tuna? Can we get this done within the next few weeks?

4) Should we try the "lumps" or do we need to go to shelf rigs or deepwater rigs (floaters).

5) What captains have you guys had good experience with? We want to haul in some meat.

Come on boys help a brother out.

2) You can do either but Venice is where most of the capts are.

3) Can catch Tuna year Round but usually winter around the lumps is the most consistent.

5) Its not cheap but all the capt's at Mexican Gulf Fishing Company are good. Also Voodoo Charters. Both in Venice.

ive never done a night trip with a guide. ive done it a few times in my friends boat, but with a guide i think its not worth the extra bucks and your so worn out for a couple of days fishing for that long. especially if you hook some big boys and fight them for 45 mins a fish its def a workout

1) day trip $2400 plus tip; night trip $4000 plus tip
2) leave nola and drive around 1.5 hrs to Venice
3) right now the tuna is hot. bigger ones during the winter months
4) ive done great at both
5) paradise outfitters is outstanding. Hunter Caballero or Rene with the 42' custom catamarin or 37' yellowfin. this group doesn't disappoint

I'd see if the Mexican Gulf charters, MGFC, have any openings. They'll know where tuna are.

Thanks for the responses guys. This will get me started calling around.

If anyone else has some captains out of the Venice area that they have had success with, post 'em and I'll give them a call.

Venice, Tuna, Day-trip.

i will throw out a curveball to you. Me and some buddies bought the Cabo trip at a CCA banquet last year, and I will have a tough time going tuna fishing in LA again. As mentioned plan on spending $3K to go here. I propose this: Fly to Cabo ($350) and fish for 2 days ($700 per day, per boat) and catch 10 tuna per day. For four guys you are less than $1K each, will catch more tuna (granted not bigger, but more) AND YOU WILL BE IN CABO, NOT GRAND ISLE OR VENICE

How much are you going to pay to get your meat home?

I b rought it as my carry on in a soft sided icechest. We ate some in Cabo, but brought 60 or so lbs home with me. Each person could carry one with 50-60 lbs, so $0 additional to bring meat home.

a tuna is like 85% meat. catch 3 big boys around 100 lbs like i did last time i went (2 months ago in venice) and everyone in your party is taking a ton of meat home. not saying the views in cabo arent alot nicer, but venice can definitely load the freezer

I went with Captain Michael Pittman with Fish Venice Charters last spring. Young but great captain. Put us on some tuna, hooked a marlin and finished up with some cobia. Was a great trip. Would book again.

I booked with Captain Will Wall, but got passed off to Captain Pittman the night before our trip. Ended up working out.

Overnighter is the best bet if you are trying to pile up meat. Can keep two limits and usually the tuna bite is hot at night, especially the closer you get to summer. Plus there ain't much better than watching that sunset when you're 100+ miles offshore.

I agree. I wish they would lower the limit to one per person, though.

Learn something new every day. Do they usually have 2 captains on a 6 pack charter?

Do a day trip w Mexican Gulf Fishing Co and you won't be disappointed. Also look at Journey South Outfitters.

I prefer July to Sept. night trip fishing top water. A big tuna hitting a yummy bird or top water plug is an awesome sight.

I agree with the cabo post. Much much better time. More fishing for the money. Plus we average 3-6 marlin a day fishing with redrum. Nobody can average that many marlin in venice. Granted they are smaller stripeys, 150lbs average. With occasional blue/black.
