Went on my first wade fishing trip recently and loved it. Any tips for a beginner?

TIA

a flask is easier to carry than beer.

Always fish up stream
Cast to the deep holes
Practice casting, you need to be very good at hitting your target. Just cast into a bucket or cup (if you're good) in your yard.
Only cast a few times to each target when you are fishing then move on to the next one
Don't be scared of snakes
Watch for the deep holes and don't wade through them, stay on the opposite bank and cast into those holes.
Structure is money, no matter what it is

Good gear will make your life easier. I went with Theophile Bourgeois a couple months ago and it was pretty awesome and definitely a different approach to fishing. I love the stealthiness of it.

Sorry for the confusion. Should have been more specific.

I'll be wade fishing the Louisiana coast, not rivers or streams.

get a good wading belt...

get a floating basket stringer with a good length of rope on it.

get a pair of wading boots.. Academy sells them for like 24.00

learn to shuffle your feet when you walk.

Before you jump off a boat or walk off a road...make sure you know what you are jumping into. muddy bottoms make for tough times.

I had some sock foot waders that I wore with crocks and it was a perfect combo. Kept my feet light

Watch for sharks. They want your fish.

What's the point of wading boots? I wore my quick drain fishing shoes and they seemed to work fine.

This. That way you bump any stingrays instead of stepping on them.

Get a quick release for your stringer and make sure the stringer is 15' minimum. hook it to your wading belt with a stainless carabiner. You want something that you can get off of you FAST if a shark goes for your fish on the stringer.

I brought a waterproof camera and took a bunch of pictures... floated off on the way back to the plane.

Quick drain fishing shoes are fine. Wading belt or over the shoulder sling pack both work great. I pack pliers, small net, and stringer. Vinyl coated cable stringers work well and wont get tangled. I will usually only fish two baits when wadefishing, so I will pack those and a back up for each.

Yeah I threw a bone Badonkadonk the entire time. Needless to say my wrist was a little numb by the end of the day, but I caught some really nice fish and nothing beats specks blowing up a topwater.

Nothing wrong with that...but if you are going to wade fish a lot, I recommend the cheap neoprene wade boots... Depending on the quick drain shoes and the price you paid for them, it won't take long for the salt water to start to eat them up.

I also find the boots stay on a little tighter if you get into some soft bottoms.
