Looking into selling my F-150 and going with a 3/4 ton for pulling/towing. Im looking at 08-11 models. Who made the best engine/trans/chassis combos during those years?

Not the 08-10 Ford. They had the 6.4 power stroke that is expensive to keep running. The 6.7 came out in 2011 in the F250/350's. It's a better engine than the 6.0/6.4

Duramax

Just check autotrader and see what's listed the most and don't buy that. There is a reason you see so many power strokes in that year range for sale

Are you pulling heavy and pulling weekly or more? If not the expense of a diesel is not needed. Unless you just want one which is cool. I did the diesel thing and it got to be a PITA. The maintenance is exponentially more expensive than your f150. The oil changes are at least $100 if you do it yourself . i finally got sick of it and bought a 3/4 with a gas engine and couldn't be happier. I pull my tractor or TT occasionally and the 6 liter gas is more than enough. I can't pull a hill at 70 without downshifting anymore though is the only downside I can come up with.

Duramax or cummins stay away from power stroke. I keep my mechanic well paid with power strokes in the shop.

The 6.7 powerstrokes are bad arse. Like others have said, is stay away from the 6.0-6.4. I have put 10k in the past 12 months on my 6.4 and have a bed plate leak which ford wants 8k to repair a $16 gasket. I'm going to let it ride with the drip. But with 140K, I have had to replace the turbo, EGR valve, and both front calipers.

I also have a 14 250 6.7 and those engines are beast. That is a sports car engine that can pull a house. I'm still amazed at the difference In performance between the 2

Like other posters said , maintenance is key as well as more costly. Every other oil change which is over 100 bucks you have to change fuel filters as well.

As far as best, IDk. I guess it's more of preference. I lean more towards fords becuSe in my mind, the look the best and have the most features. The new Chevys are nice but I'm not crazy about the interior. That's just me though

My 6.7 is incredible. I am either about to go into the engine (fuel, rods, billet turbo, etc) or trade up to a 2017 and just do full deletes.

Diesels are rarely are necessary, but they are hella fun.

Duramax for those years. The Cummins was good those years but it's a fuel hog. Don't get a Ford that doesn't have a 6.7 and preferably don't get an early 6.7.

Got it. I have a work truck so my personal just sits. It gets used on weekends only pulling a 9k camper or a 22 bay boat. The 5.4 triton does ok but shifts a lot hunting for gears. Wanting a rig that doesn't seem to struggle as much. It won't be a daily driver so maybe one or two oil changes a year. I'm wondering how much a programmer would solve the "gear hunting"?

Programmer will not give you what you want. Larger engine will. 6.0 GM motor or ford 6.2 is what you want.

Nah it's gonna struggle with a 9k pound camper no matter what you do to it.

A newer half ton would have a much easier time with it. If you're a ford guy look at an ecoboost before you spring for a diesel. The Chevys also tow extremely well now. You could probably find a used one for a decent price. The 6 speed transmissions make a huge difference with those trucks.

A diesel is a good buy for a dedicated tow rig though. Just stick to cummins and Duramax for those years and have it checked out by someone who knows what to look for. Dont let high mileage scare you too much.

Since it will not be your daily driver, I would definitely go with 3/4 ton gas burner. It will give you everything you need without the high maintenance cost and price.

Might want to consider upgrading your rear axle gears in your f150. Dropping 1k on new gears is a lot cheaper than the diesel option. That with a programmer will probably do the trick.
