Can someone tell me if this is a water turtle? I do not want to put him in the water behind the house if he is a land turtle. We normally see the red eared slider, first time seeing this one.

Just put him near the water and let him make his own choice

When I was a kid, we used to hang out by the canal at the end of the street. A woman from around the block showed up one day with a turtle to let it go in the canal. We tried telling her that it was a box turtle - she can't throw it in the canal. She kept telling us, " Y'all just want me to put it on land so you can catch it when I leave." She wouldn't take our word and threw the damn box turtle into the canal. After she drove off, we were able to save the poor bastard that was flopping around in the water trying to stay afloat.

Considering it is about a foot to foot and a half drop to the water off the bulk head, I do not think he would make it out.

I thought so but have not seen many. His shell seemed a little higher than a water turtle. Thanks for the confirmation.

Paint your name on it's shell. That is a land turtle.

Don't let it go far from your house. They normally don't have much of a range. It will feel lost and probably die.*

I've read their range is only like an acre or so. Not sure if that's true or not.

Not sure about that. When I was a kid, me and my brothers used to catch them and paint our names on them. If one of us caught one that was named, we would let each other know were at. We had them travel more then a mile.

Just did a google search. Two to three acres are generally their range. They relocate when habit can't provide them with food. Also, if its cloudy for days, they get lost because they navigate by the sun.

Maybe they were trying to get away from you from being painted.
