So a buddy of mine has a 2007 GMC Z71 with 160K+ miles on it ( 5.3 v8 ). It has developed a loud tapping noise under the valve cover. sounds like the valves/lifters needs to be re-gapped. but maybe a little louder than that. Maybe something came a loose. There is no rattling noise, and it sounds as if it is only on one cylinder.

So he brings it to the dealership to get a quote to fix, they charge 1100 to tear it down/ just to look at it. then tell him it will be a complete motor tear down to the crankshaft. parts needed include:
intake gasket
rocker arm cover gasket
exhaust gasket
water pump gasket??
cam shaft gasket
camshaft bolts
crankshaft bolts
a/c belt ? "i guess they cut them off now....
head gasket
head bolts
ALL lifters??
lifter guides
cam shaft
oil and filter
2 gallons of coolent
20 hours labor

So i told him you could pretty much drop a new core in that truck for that price......

and they are changing out parts that dont need to be.
it really doesnt sound 4k bad, he is still driving it to work.

what does the OB say? Could this really need a complete tear down, or is this BS.

Sounds like a rocker arm that needs tightening.

In my hot rod days this would be a bent valve or more than likely a stuck hydraulic lifter. . All you do is loosen the valve guide and take the push rod out and drop in a new lifter. I don't know, get another opinion from a private shop not a dealer.

meauxjeaux is right. the lifters are your culprit. If there is no damage to the heads, pistons, or valves it is a 1500.00 fix most of the time. Plus you can choose which cam you want and pick up some good power to boot.

Same thing happened recently in my '06 Suburban.
A replaced a rocker arm and used premium gas - no more tapping sounds.

yep. Popular swap is replace with LS lifters, put in a Z06 cam. If headers are put in as well 100 hp gains are not uncommon after a tune.
