I am looking pretty hard at a 2014 F-250 Crew cab diesel. It has around 80,000 miles on it and a lot of options (Fx4 package, heated and cooled leather, back up camera, 4x4, etc. - loaded). Priced at $40,998 I am wondering how good of a truck that is for that year.

I am brand agnostic for the most part, I want a used truck this one is kind of at the top end of my price range but doable with the options I like. I have heard mixed reviews about Ford's diesel engines.

Yes I want/need a 3/4 ton diesel I plan on pulling a 5th wheel and boat in combo for fair distances in the summer and some other times of the year.

Help? TIA

FWIW, I bought a 2014 F350 last December. Previously owned a GMC 3500 for 10 years. Great ruck. I give style points, interior, and amenities to GMC. But the 6.7 has been impressive thus far. I think Ford makes a better "working" vehicle and GMC is more comfortable.
Don't think you'll go wrong with the Ford F-250. Good luck.

That sounds good, but I am a cash buyer and don't want to take that much out of savings. This one is a bit more than what I want to do. I actually could go a little higher and get a brand new 2017 with the aluminum body that is a basic truck. If I were going to spend any more money that would be my route.

My BIL brought two 2017s for his business totally loaded at arounf $70K each one a F250 and one a 350. They are crazy expensive new and loaded.

Used Diesel's at dealerships are outrageous and they hardly negotiate at all on price.
Just doing a quick search you can get a 2017 4 door f250 Lariat with 0 miles for 50k in Houston.

LINK

For 55k you can get lariat loaded with leather and navigation. I would never pay 70k

I own a 2014 f250 fx4 with 6.7L and it's an amazinh truck. I bought mine new for $51k right after the 2015s came out. Here's my quick take:

I bought the extended warranty because I'm so nervous about stuff breaking and costing thousands. This thing has a ton of electronics on it...3 different motors in the side view mirrors alone, and that shite ain't cheap when it breaks.

I've also done all the maintenance through the dealer and followed the manufacturers recommendations for the first time in my life...too many horror stories about expensive repairs and warranty claims...could be urban legends but makes me nervous.

I've only had to replace the starter in 3 years and 60k miles, which seemed early but I could see it being taxed to turn over that big engine.

I have one weird issue where my AC doesn't seem to engage properly on starting, but if I cycle through the settings (dash vents, floor vents, defrost, and then back to dual vent followed by hitting the recirculating button then it will blow harder and colder.

It tows my boat and trailer like a champ, much better than any 1/2 ton truck I've had. It rides really comfortably and is softer in the back end than I expected. The AC seats are game changing in the Houston heat.

My biggest concern is the risk once I get out of warranty...but hopefully by then the earlier model 6.7s and high mileage vehicles will have established a clearer track record of what types of failures are common.

I haven't followed the values of these trucks but there are a lot of them out there which tells me they probably hold their value really well.

I have to do the same thing to my 2015 if the truck has been sitting in the sun on a hot day.

I'm at 52,000 miles and have had zero issues.

Great trucks. I had a 2015. Before you get dead set on a 2014, Ford put a bigger and better turbo on the 2015+ models. It makes a pretty noticeable difference.

Maybe I'm oblivious to used diesel prices, but $41k for a truck with 80,000 miles seems way too high.

I had a 2012 I put 130k on and the only issue I had with it was a blown intercooler to intake tube.. Replaced it with an aluminum one and was good to go. Have a 17' now and would have to agree with the other poster in regards to the 15+ upgrades to the turbo and the difference it makes between the 11-14' models. If you're stuck on the 14', i'd think somewhere around the 36-37k mark (depending on options) would be a good deal.. These trucks seem to hold their value well despite mileage-

Your fuel pump will go out within the next 40k miles unless it already has and has been repaired. Other than that they are great trucks.

the fact that the OT is freaking out about F250 prices at 80,000 miles and the OB is more open to it tells you which board you should listen to

Not sure about the 15-16's, but on the 17's they advertise the tank as 34g on the CCSB, compared to the small arse 26g I had on the 12'. With that being said, I've ran mine down to "E" and filled it up to which it would only take 28g. Read a lot of bitching from people with 17's about this, and Ford has set the 17's to read "0" when in reality you still have 6 gallons left. They are doing this in an attempt to try to preserve the pumps and make them last because of issues on the previous models.

There are 2015's on cargurus with 20k to 30k fewer miles for only $3,000 - $5,000 more.

I have a 2012 with 95000 miles, basically the same truck, the 15-16 models got a better turbo, I eventually might upgrade mine.

In that time I've had a sensor go out and throw a code, don't recall what sensor(EGR sensor maybe?) and Ford replaced under warranty. I had the cold side intercooler pipe(plastic) explode on me at 40,000 miles. It's a common issue and Ford replaces them with the exact same plastic pipe that's bound to fail again, when I deleted I replaced it with an aluminum upgrade( ~$300) for piece of mind. Speaking of delete, the reason I deleted at 85,000 miles was because my DEF sending unit was throwing a code and going out. Ford wanted $860 to repair it, I did a delete pipe, tuner, and the intercooler pipe upgrade for ~$1200 and picked up 2-3 mpg, so that was a no brainer, I was planning to wait until the 100k mile warranty was up but my hand was forced, I've been happy I did it.

I'm also pretty anal about maintenance, I drain the water in fuel trap regularly, I change the oil/oil filter every 5k miles, and the fuel filters and air filter every other oil change. I'm also considering adding an aftermarket fuel filtering system as backup. Maintenance is a big thing on these trucks as alot of the fuel system failures have been linked back to crappy maintenance.

isn't even fully broken in yet with a diesel. Especially when you can hit 300k and still be in good shape

I'm going to hate getting rid of mine

Ford's recent diesel track record says 80,000 is broken in enough for shite to start going wrong within 20,000 more miles.

Here you go, 2016 with only 26,xxx miles
If I were spending 46K I would step up a bit and have factory warranty left. JMO

For 46K this is the truck I would buy
