I just bought an 06 silverado z71 and I am having trouble getting it into 4 low. It will go into 4 high no problem but when the 4 low button is pressed you hear a clunk in the back but it just stays in 2 high. this is my first 4x4 truck. any help is good help. thanks!

Are you putting it in neutral? Has to be in neutral to go to 4 low

Have you done this?

2hi
Press 4hi and it engages
Neutral stopped
Press 4lo

I can't remember if you are allowed to go straight from 2wd to 4lo or not, but the above process is how I've always done it

Try what hammer suggests and backing up a bit afterward. Sometimes 4 low is just persnickety.

I move my arse back and forth in the seat when it's being pissy. Also works for shifting out of park

4hi to 4low should do the trick. My FX4 is picky about getting into 4low as well.

I have the same model and have changed the encoder motor that engages the 4wd twice and the switches that send the signal to the motor. Knock on wood, 164k miles and no issues other than those.

I hate to sound like an old get off my lawn type, but to me this is unnecessary. Was it so hard to reach down and pull a manual shift, that was directly connected to the transfer case?

Had an 04, that coder shift motor started getting squirrely at about 75K when I traded that POS off. Cranked the truck one day and the somb was in 4L! I used to turn the engine off to shift to 4L in the 04 and previous 94 I had.

I had an 04 and the switch went completely out. I don't trust those damn buttons. My current truck has a shifter on the floor.

The generation before his was always blowing 4wd actuator fuses on the floor shifter

If you have a floor shift, isn't the actuator only for the front differential? You'd still be stuck in 2wd, but the transfer case should shift with the lever, right?

Yep. The floor shift goes straight to the shift fork.

Yes. It's like not locking your manual hubs or when a Ford can't make vacuum pressure

The actuator went out on my 94 and I had 2L ability for a while.
