I flew from Baltimore to New Orleans this past December with my XDs .45 - Southwest Airlines.
You'll need a hard case to put the gun in that has the capability to be locked. The gun obviously has to be unloaded. You can bring ammo but it's weight limited. I was just bringing enough to carry concealed in LA so I just grabbed an old 20 round box and put like 10 bullets in it. I put that box in the same case with the gun. They can be packed together but the ammo can't be loose - secure it in a box.
You have to declare it and unlock and show the contents of the case. They should not handle your gun at all. TSA screeners may want to see it as well but likely not. They'll have you sign a form and put a sticker on the case.
**IMPORTANT**
Secure your carrying case to your suitcase in some fashion. I bought a cable lock and looped it through my case's handle and around the inner support of my suitcase and locked it. You do not want your case with your gun in it disappearing. I suppose someone could steal your entire suitcase but it's much easier to just steal a loose gun carrying case.

walk in the airport to your airline DECLARE the gun, case has to be lockable unloaded and you will fill out declaration form and it must be signed & placed inside case, after the gun has been shown its unloaded then YOU LOCK THE CASE regardless of what TSA says LOCK THE CASE hand over gun. Ammo has to be checked in separate bag in its orig packaging. My exp On Delta once a firearm is checked on the plane that plane will not leave without you.

i got to the Detroit airport a while back and forgot i had a leatherman in pocket, and wasn't going to check luggage...packed it inside steel toe boots and went through carry-on line like a champ. Didn't want to toss it, haha but checked luggage on the way back a few days later to be on safe side!

It made complete sense.
I outlined in the beginning that I had to bring a piece of sensitive equipment on board. And I started the thread on the OB because I know that some of you guys have had to bring guns on the plane so I was seeing what protocol I had to be prepared for AND who I would need to contact (if anyone ahead of time).
This is so intrinsically analogous to this thread it's basically my thread.

Carrying guns isnot the same as a radioactive machine that was used to convert Dr. Banner to the Hulk. You could have got lucky and someone could have known but if memory serves no one did. The fact that the thread was repeadly bumped, kept it on the front page where it got more views...
