My truck has a built-in trailer brake controller that works well.

When I plug the boat trailer in (using the round adapter) the truck says "trailer disconnected". All the lights work well, but no adjustment on the brakes.

Is this a normal deal? Is it b/c of using the adapter?

There are two wires in 6 pin adapters that come out the box backwards pretty often.

If you split the case there's a good chance 4 of the wires will be soldered on the terminals and two that are on spade bits or screw terminals. Cross them.

I have another adapter that I haven't used yet. I'll put that one and see if the symptom changes. BRB.

Are you talking about a 4-pin on the trailer side to a 6 on the truck side?

7 to 6 adapters are fricked up a lot it seems like. Always hear of people having problems and I've had to swap wires on the last 2 I bought.

Yeah the center pin on a 6 is usually the brakes whereas the center on a 7 is the aux and always hot (tto charge Batts etc) and they make the adapters so you can switch em.

Never had a boat that worked that way. Only surge. How big before they work with the controller?

I don't know, exactly. The controller has worked w/ everything I've pulled.

The boat is #2900 empty, so add another 1K for trailer, fuel, etc.

I would think the controller would work. I am picking up a new 5 to 7 today, it looked like the one I had only had 4 active (brass) spades). I think that is the issue.

Me either, nor would I want electric brakes on a boat. OP could be be surprised to find out he has surge brakes.

My boat trailer does the same thing but it is equipped with hydraulic surge brakes. My 5th wheel has electric brakes and they are energized by the 7 pin connector.
