To early for food plots
Posted by nogoodjr on 8/29/17 at 12:41 pm00
I plant food plots every year on the properties I lease. Most years I target Sept 15 to plant. Last night I planted 2 plots ahead of the rain (NWLA). Looking at the long-term forecast the temps are very mild for this time of year and chances of rain looked good. I planted clover, wheat, and oats.
What say the OB, did I waste my time and money? Did I plant too early?

Your biggest risk is Army worms. When it gets hot and dry, and you have the only tender green material out there, Army worms can zero you out.
If you can spray once every 10 days throughout Sept you'll be fine. If not chances are better than even that worms will get you.
Also, a mild winter last year means this is an especially bad year for army worms. We are spraying them in our summer food plots right now.
