I built one myself that was smaller but somehow ended up relatively sturdy, but now building one a bit bigger and with a little more time, looking for some general tips.

I'm sure most of yall know what I'm talking about. Basic box shape, seat, back and sides.

For example, what size screws should I use and what's the best strategy for where to locate them?

Should I bother also using wood glue for added support?

TIA!

Use as many screws as you want. Wood glue won't hurt anything. Drywall screws will do fine, but you can use whatever.

Best one I ever saw had stuffing on the seat with cloth stapled over it, and a higher back that was angled to be comfortable for the kids to lean back in. Also, put some hooks for their bags

Go to a hardware store and get a kreg pocket screw jig.

He'd be wasting $100. You can get a countersink drill bit for like $6

Makes pocket screws which make very strong and easy joints.

Watched a YouTube vid. Are pocket screws stronger than a straight on screw or is more for looks? Either way that looks pretty awesome for now or future projects. I'm kinda liking woodworking and wouldn't mind getting more into it but seems like it takes a ton of tools.

I've got some termite infested wood you can use if interested.

Wondering on screw length. Is longer (2-2.5") better than 1-1.5"?

Also trying to maximize the fit to the ladder top given that it's one of those fiberglass ones with all kinds of holes in the top for holding cans/tools.

At some point soon it'll get to KISS, but seeing if there's any ideas. For such a common thing there's basically nothing online.

Yeah. I'm actually really good with the creative add-ons for safety, comfort and usefulness, not as good on the basic carpentry.

Length all depends on what size wood you use. IIRC, generally you use 2-3x the width of the wood for length. I'd just stick with 2x to make it easier. You aren't building Fort Knox.

Say you want a 48" wide seat. Instead of bolting that directly to the top of the ladder, bolt a 24" wide piece in between to spread the load. If you're good, you can sandwich two plates around the top of the ladder, one above and one below, so you don't have to worry about all of the holes

A circular saw, drill, ruler, square and a pencil will be sufficient for 90% of woodworking projects

Post a picture of the top of the ladder and we can probably help with the mounting. It might be worth it to just buy a whole new dedicated ladder though
