RATW,
500-800 yards is a LONG way off. I don't have anywhere to shoot that's even close to that distance. I think there's still a range south of S'port that has the only civilian 1000 yard range in LA.
Before jumping into such a specialized area of shooting, you might try shooting your 270 at longer distances. How far away are you shooting now?
Long range shooting is a special subculture of it's own utilizing special scope bases, high end optics and very accurate rifles that have been worked over by a gunsmith.
Yeah, your 270 Win action can be rechambered/rebarreled to a nearly limitless number of different chambers, depending on just what it is you want. Be prepared to spend a LOT of $$$. Personally, I wouldn't change a 270 Win rifle into a 308 Win for the type of shooting you're talking about. I'd keep the 270 in case I wanted to resume hunting someday and start afresh w/ a build for a long range rifle.
You can find lots of info at some long range shooting forums on the 'net.

I could def keep the .270 round, its one I am pretty fond of, I was just open to any suggestions in case anyone had any.
As far as a range, I can def push 400 yards anytime I want on private property, and plan on expanding on that in the years ahead. I understand where you are coming from, but I also have a $700+ rifle thats not being used at all, thats why I wanted to see what my options are with it.

.270 is a long action so you would not want to change it to .308. You'd want to stay with long rounds not that you couldn't do it. Like he said there's a lot you can do with it, but unless you just love getting shite stomped by big magnums, the most accurate rounds are in short actions. Which is the main reason I wouldn't bother spending a lot of money on this one as a long range rifle. Make it where you can take that 400 yard shot consistently. By then you'll have learned enough to know what you really want if you're going to step out past that and what it's going to cost. Which is a lot.
Not to mention 400 yards is reasonable for long range hunting so you actually could get into terminal ballistics. One other thing, ANY serious accuracy shooting is going to require you to be hand loading. And be very good at it. It's as important as the rifle if not more so.

Check out Hill Country Rifles. They provide an accurizing service on rifles. Really allows you to maximize accuracy out of a OTC rifle. Call and talk to them. Pick your scope carefully and send it with the rifle to them. When you get it back it will be a fine shooter.

The AR10 was the original "AR." The reason it had "AR" was because it stool for Armalite model 10. Then they created a new rifle with Eugene Stoner that fired the 5.56/.223 round. They designated that rifle as an Armalite model 15, or AR15.

It's a bdl model and I've already had it parkerized. I have a place where I can take a shot around 800 yards on a deer and I would love to be able to make that shot. And also I want to make my rifle bad arse.

Looks like you've got a lot of great answers. I am a huge 270 win fan and it is very capable round. If you're set on rebuilding you would be best served to look at something in the 6.5 category. 260 Remington and 6.5 creedmor are both big right now. They are based on the 308 case, but can be built on a long action. Some people choose long actions to allow a longer OAL of your cartridge which is handy with the VLD bullets (Very Low Drag, they're looooong). Then again, the 6.5-06 is an option. If you wanted to build a magnum you would have to open up your bolt face.

Some years ago when I was looking to have an XP-100 built in 22 Rem Bench Rest, one of the gunsmiths I called was at Hill Country. He was unable to help me as he didn't have an XP at the time, but he was very knowledgable and was a pleasure to talk to.
