Do you go back over it with the disk to cover the seed?
Or just hope the rain gives the seed good contact with the dirt? .
We plant oats and wheat and always go back over it with the disk to cover the seed but have a friend that doesn't and says his plots are good each year.

I think a disk sometimes buries some of the seed to deep. I like to disk, broadcast seed, then come back over with a light drag to cover the seed. Something as simple as a piece of chain link fence does a good job.

We always just broadcast it and leave it. Never have any problems. Probably should have covered it some this year because it looks like its a long time till it rains.
We have an old metal boxspring that we keep in the barn to use as a drag but we always are too lazy to use it.

Look on the lsu website they give the recommended depth to cover. It is usually less than 3/4". Almost none of your seed will grown then the disc puts them too far down.

I always disk then let it sit until right before a rain, then I broadcast. Looks like a chance of rain for next wednesday, so I'll probably take off a half day next tuesday to go put out the seed. Always has worked for us.

The few times we did, we never covered the seeds. Broadcast them before a rain and they will sprout.

Oats are typically planted 1/2" to 1" but wheat can be broadcast right on the top. When we plant we broadcast the seed, and follow with a harrow or the culitpacker. Oats, wheat, or food plot mixes come up great if you get rain. If you know a good rain is a day or so away you can let the rain do the work for you.

General rule of thumb, the bigger the seed - the deeper it should be covered. Any type of harrow will do better than a disc. If you use the disc, its better to straighten the gangs before covering to avoid getting seed too deep. Oats and wheat will be ok, clover can easily be covered too deep.

I use the drop down gate from my 4-wheeler trailer (expanded metal with angle iron support stiffners) as a drag. Works great. Have used old tires as well
