Those of you on the fence about an AR, read

In all 1,000 threads that have been posted about people wanting to get an AR I have always recommended they build their first one.
1) because it is nowhere near as hard as it sounds.
2) you save money in the long run and get more quality than already assembled ARs costing the same amount as your build.
3) it gives you a sense of ownership and confidence when fiddling with it
An easy alternative to building completely from scratch it to get a cheap lower receiver (the least important part of the gun, yet the regulated part) and all the parts to assemble it. Then just buy an already assembled upper when a good inexpensive one comes around.
Well folks, a good inexpensive one has come around and so it is time for the building to begin. PSA released a kit with many of the desirable features (unlike the JSE Surplus upper that was popular awhile back). Chambered in 5.56, 1 in 7 twist, M4 feed ramps, etc.

if you weren't smart enough to pick up one of their lowers when they were $49 you can get one from PSA for $79 now, or get one of these Spikes lowers for $79 or for the super cheap build get one of these Surplus Arms lowers for $59 (made by the same people who make the PSA lowers.)
that is all.

So can you order it directly or does it have to go thru a FFL? What about the lower, does it have to go thru a FFL? If I order the upper and lower do I need any other items to finish building it (other than mags and tactools)? I have always wanted to build one but I am REALLY scared about trying to do this. I have a basic knowledge of guns and can strip my shotgun/rifle down to clean it, but messing with trigger mechanisms and all the other stuff freaks me out (that's why I want to try it, in order to get over my fear/ignorance). Where is the best place to get how-to instruction on buliding one... I mean other than youtube? TIA and thanks for the shopping info

the kit can be shipped to your door. the lower needs to be shipped to an FFL. Don't worry you can't accidentally get FFL stuff shipped to your door and get in trouble. they will not ship a lower or any other FFL item to anyone but an FFL who has faxed them a copy of their license.
Literally all you need is the youtube video. Here is a good guide and there is a link to a video in it as well LINK. Seriously, you're going to laugh when you realize how easy it was to assemble and how basic the trigger is. This kit and a lower are the only items you will need to build the rifle. You will need to order a magazine (magpul or c-products with orange follower are what i use) and a rear sight at the very least. or you could throw a scope or red dot on top of it.

Only the lower receiver itself needs to go through an FFL. I built my first AR with a hammer and a vise grip. The lower is very easy to assemble, the upper is a little bit more tricky. If you are local to me and want to build an upper, I have all the tools to do it. Just let me know.

I'm ignorrent about ARs. What kinda rife would I have if I went this route? I see the upper has a chrome-lined barrel and comes with a charging handle and all that good shite. Is this the equivilient of building an $1100 AR for $700???

When I built mine I used the Brownell's videos. They were a big help, but it was a very easy process. Probably the hardest part for me was the roll pin for the mag release. Seriously easy to build.

Just ordered one! Gonna pick up a lower from a local seller. Can't wait to build my first AR! I may be back to ask some questions.

I really have absolutely zero use for an AR, but I do like the idea of building my own rifle. I guess I'll have to jump on this bandwagon one day.

Thinking about picking up the 699 bushmaster at academy. I'm not really worried about building my own even if it is easy.

what are the specs on the bushmaster. I bet this one is better. barrel twist, caliber (5.56 or .223), how well is the gas key staked, bbl chromed or chrome moly (which is nowhere near the same as chromed), etc?
To answer the question about the prices with the MOE gear. MOE gear isn't that expensive. You basically save the money you would have spent on the regular gear and buy the MOE gear. For instance this gives you the option of instead of getting the regular buttstock for say $25 and then buying an MOE for $45 you cut the shite and just start off with the MOE. Your adding $45ish and subtracting $25ish to the parts kit. Don't worry you're not getting anything for free. Get it?

Not sure of the specs on the bushmaster. I'm positive the OP is better though without looking it up. It would just be a plinker in my case.

Meh...maybe I'm biased by carrying one around everywhere i went for a year but I just can't see why anyone would want to invest in an AR type rifle for civilian purposes. Definitely don't buy one for "home defense" purposes unless you want to put tiny holes in 3 different people. Ah well, if you just wanna shoot they're kinda fun so go nuts!
