Fwiw, I just got done hanging out with a state biologist at the camp who was scoring some huge bucks and asking various questions about what we were seeing/killing and how the flood seemed to affect our herd.

I'm not going to bore y'all with details, but he has repeatedly stated that we have deer dying of old age just because of the type of terrain we have and how healthy he thinks our deer herd is.

We shoot some young bucks too. He also aged a 4 point and ugly 7 point we killed last year at 4,5 and 3.5 years old respectively going off jawbones and pictures. The several years we were in DMAP also showed that we were shooting a good bit of 4.5+ year old bucks and even two that were too old to tell. Further proof IMO that you simply cannot manage some places with guns and bullets.

You guys are killing me....

Maybe we should change the name from "deer hunting" to "antler hunting"

What ever happened to club members actually being happy when someone kills a deer?

I don't know, but I know that's not something I want anything to do with.

Yea and I think most places I hunt are that way, including the high and dry big buck places. Granted, you may see a larger percentage of the deer simply due to being able to more effectively cover the whole property, but I don't think you see nearly as many as you think you do.

Regardless of your practices you will have bucks growing old and dying without somebody ever laying eyes on them. It's the nature of the prey. I believe the only exception to this is high fence where your deer population is controllable. You simply cannot control your population on free range deer.

I'm not bitching. I just like to argue. I participate in both sides of this argument all year every year. One side is clearly gaining popularity though and I prefer for it to stay more balanced.

Please inform me on how a couple of people with guns can control how many deer inhabit a given area when the deer are free to come and go as they please short of blasting every single deer anyone sees, which I have never heard of any group of people doing ever.

You sound like a blast to hunt with.

I killed a button buck Saturday morning in front of dogs, and it was the second one of the day. No one bitched and people were actually happy we didn't have to chase dogs all day.

If you think what I said was hilariously stupid, which you definitely implied, then refute it.

Miller man, I don't high fence hunt so you're on your own with that one. The rules are different with controlled populations.

I misread it. I now see there's nothing funny about that at all.
