I just got there A17...its the first semi auto 17hmr. I have only put about 30 rounds through it but like it so far.

I played with the cheap Savage and Marlin. Went with the Marlin because I didn't like the way the magazine release felt on the Savage. Honestly would have been happy with either but it came down to that nitpicky of a reason to choose one over the other. $200+ tax for the XT17 with accutrigger, bull barrel, and polymer stock. Think I would have spent the extra money on a wood stock if I were to do it over again. Mine shot sub MOA out of the box.

Thats why I went with the wood stock version. I had read the plastic was a little flimsy and that made some have issues with the mag. They were not getting snapped into fully I think. And it looks better lol

Just bought one. Actually picked it up Friday. Love it, went with a stainless with a laminated stock. THe Accutrigger is boss. Very good shooting gun. I am a Ruger man but this Savage is very nice and flat shooting. THe bull barrel makes it a little heavy, but that is a good thing

I have a marlin 17hmr and 17mach 2. Both laminated with stainless heavy barrels. They shoots the best groups of any rifle i own. Me, my dad, and my cousin all have the same gun, they are weird with ammo. Mine and my dad shoots winchester silvertips the best. My cousins shoots the federal ballistic tips the best..... oddly enough, all them shoot hornady the worst, like its a huge drop in accuracy.

mine shoots CCI's good. My wife loves this gun, she sighted it in for me this morning. I might not get it back.

I have a bolt action savage and the A17. Both are my favorite guns to shoot. Thing explode everything it hits.

I have a savage in 17hmr. Live everything about the rifle except the magazine catch. Gotta be the worst design ever.

The 17HMR is one of the most accurate cartridges designed. Regardless of rifle manufacturer, most are crazy , stupid accurate. When Hornady introduced the HMR in 2002, I went all in and built a custom rifle using the following components: Sako Finnfire action, Jewell 12 oz. trigger, Lilja barrel, Stith tiger stripe maple stock, custom reamer, all built by a rimfire bench rest gunsmith in Ohio. It shoots "lights out" but honestly there are $250 factory rifles that shoot just as good. It's all about the ammo brand and what your barrel likes.
I also built a similar 17HM2 using same components but different wood stock. IMO, the HM2 is the best rimfire squirrel cartridge developed. 75-80 yds head shots are no problem, and it don't ruin meat like it's big brother. Only problem, HM2 ammo is rarely produced as most manufacturers threw in the towel
My suggestion for the OP and others in the market, buy what make/model 17HMR rifle you like and top with quality glass.

You're shooting deer with a .17?

Not sure if directed towards me, but my aforementioned / pictured rifles are used to shoot jackrabbits, coyotes, squirrel, coons, paper, etc...

damn sweet looking guns...

My CZ 22LR is like that. If I hadn't tried so many different types of ammo, I wouldn't have found out that it shoots fricking Thunderbolts the second best out of anything

Yup. I've got a Savage bolt action in 17 Mach 2 and my son has one in 17 HMR. I can give high endorsements to both. We got ours for a ground squirrel hunt a few years ago. The Savage is a very good gun, although it's not nearly refined as others. The action is not as smooth as others and the stock is glorified tupperware, but the guns are accurate. The Accutrigger is a nice feature. If you plan on shooting long range, get a Mueller 4.5-14X APV scope (like both of ours have) and you'll be in good shape. I'd also suggest buying a 10 magazine. I don't remember the site, but you can Google it. The 17 HMR uses the same magazine as the 22 WMR while the 17 M2 uses the same mag as the 22LR. 17 HMR ammo is very high quality, but each gun has it's own preferences. That seems odd as ALL 17 HMR ammo made in the US is made by CCI. Buy a box of a couple different types and see which one your gun likes best.
This is a 3 shot group (0.54") at 100 yards I shot last month in preparation for a prairie dog hunt. The whited out spots are the sighter shots.

Ahh ok, I just assumed when you said headshots with your .17 doesn't ruin the meat I assumed you were talking about deer.

Ah, now there's a man who knows a thing or two about squirrel hunting w/ a rifle. I agree w/ you entirely. Fortunately, I bought about 1500 rounds of M2 ammo a few years ago for a ground squirrel hunt and have a lot left over. In addition, I found (and bought) some at a local gun store a few mos ago. I hope production of the M2 is not stopped entirely, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was.

I have a savage 93R17BVSS in .17HMR and that pea shooter is a tack driver! Sub MOA no problem, a bit heavy to hunt with but absolutely very very accurate. Bought it for exploding squirrels while chilling at my camp.
