Thinking of an Entry-Level 9mm Semi to Purchase w/in the Next Couple Months

Starting the research early because that's the most fun part of the process for me.
Want something on the lower end to get a feel for what I'd like in a good 9mm semi handgun. Primary purpose is as a self-defense piece a little more economical to shoot than my .38 with more ammo capacity. I'm also undecided whether I'd like a mag disconnect and additional external safety. Also undecided about DAO or DA/SA. Recoil not really a factor to me. Would like to spend less than $400.
Am interested to see personal experiences with these models:
Kel-tech PF9: I understand some have had issues with this model, but the price is hard to beat. No external saftey or mag disconnect. DAO. Lightest of the bunch. Small ammo capacity.
Taurus PT111: Like the idea of a fuller grip on compact carry piece, but that's a lot of weight for a CCW. Good ammo capacity, though. External safety but no mag disconnect safety. DA/SA
Taurus PT709 slim: More concealable than the PT111, less weight, but you lose the ammo capacity. SA/DA.
S&W sd9ve: I'm well aware of its notorious Sigma roots. A heavy trigger on a CCW piece is not a negative to me. Good ammo capacity. Academy always seems to have a sale on them. DA/SA. It's a S&W. Somewhat hefty.
Ruger LC9: Reasonable weight. Small ammo capacity. External safety. Mag disconnect. DAO. It's a Ruger.
Ruger P95: Good ammo capacity. External safety. No mag disconnect. On the heavy end for a CCW. DA/SA. Upper end of budget. It's a Ruger.
Kahr CW9: Seems to have a good reputation. No external safety or mag disconnect. Fuller grip. Reasonable weight for a CCW. Small ammo capacity. DAO. Upper end of budget.
I know the Rugers and Kahr are going to be higher quality pistols, but if I can get a reliable gun for much less, I would rather do that for this purchase.
ETA: Ruger LC9

I've got the S&W. Get ready to do some real practice to get used to the trigger.

How would you compare the trigger to the DA pull on a .38 snubbie?
Other than the heavy trigger, what is your general opinion of the S&W?

I'd definitely go with the kahr cw9 out of those choices. I just picked one up and I like it alot.

Well, that Kel-tech PF9 sure has Trayvon pushing up daisies!

Are you basing this on personal experience?

By the time you spend the amount of money for one of those you may as well buy a M&P glock or XD. If you are like every other beginning gun enthusiast you'll buy a real big piece of shite then realize you never use it anymore and it's not worth anything. At least if you buy one of the three is posted you can always sell it or trade it off.

Not spending that on a gun right now.

Not bad. Unfortunately, I don't feel knowledgeable enough to buy a used gun from someone.

What knowledge to you need?

Enough knowledge to know whether it's been truly taken care of and properly used, as well as if parts have been screwed with or exchanged.

I guess I take that knowledge for granted.

They are police trade ins. Cops aren't allowed to change anything on their guns unless something wears out like a recoil spring and that's done but there armorer.. These guns are 5 years old. Would be willing to bet they don't need anything. Yet have trijicon night sights. Those are 150+ installed. Just trying to help you buy a quality handgun as opposed to a "starter" gun.

Thanks. I probably will look into that then if you think I can get a quality used gun from that site. Of course, I think that M&P is going to be too big to conceal carry.
