It would be my first dog. Had a few family dogs growing up, but nothing pure bred. Mostly muts. Though they were fun, I'm looking for a dog with some solid lineage. Also has to be a beast in the duck blind.

Any tips/ concerns I should be wary of?

Any other dog recommendations?

Should I go male or female?

They can do that but don't prefer it.

They need attention, space, and exercise.

Why not just get a lab or retriever?

I feel like everyone I know has a lab or a retriever. I just want something a little different

While a shorthair may retrieve, it is not its first choice. Trust me on this, I have had 4, still have 3. When that bird dies the fun ends for most of the breed...

Very good, my puppy will pick out kids at the ballpark to go play with. They tolerate a lot of kid bullshite.

You should think about a Chesapeake, they're fun first dogs.

If you have any responsibilities that keep you away from home often, don't buy one. My GWP is a huge pain in the arse and dictates my plans for me most of the time. Hyper as frick, stubborn, annoying. Love him but he's a lot to handle and I've got a lot of other things going on so it makes it tough for both of us.

Wait a year and then see how you feel. Having an energetic dog as a young single guy puts a huge strain on things you can go and do. Unless you have someone living with you who is willing to take care of the dog it's a huge pain in the arse having to plan everything around them.

Yep, can't just haul arse southbound on the weekends or stay out drinking all night without making sure the dog is taken care of. I know kids are way worse, but its similar in a lot of ways.

I wouldn't. You will regret choosing this breed to be different. There is a reason you see 10 times as many labs/retrievers than GSPs. My similarly-situated coworker recently made this same mistake and commented just this week that he is ready to take that dog and leave it on the interstate. This is after several weeks of obedience school and the dog being nearly 1 y/o. Do yourself a favor and don't.

I'm going to take an educated guess and say you'd be pretty dissatisfied with a GSP. They're a handful.

If you want something different, get a poodle.
