Thinking about a guys trip to south LA

Probably 3-4 days in February. I know it's a shite time of year but what's the fishing like down there? My buddy lived down there for a few years and we're thinking about chalmette or Venice. From what I've seen...it looks like crab and red fish are our best bet. Not wanting to dish out a lot of money for this trip so I'm hoping fishing from a pier would be fine.
Any recommendations? My experience with south Louisiana is literally one baseball game on Baton Rouge and this past sugar bowl so any insight would be much appreciated.

Get a guide so you will actually catch fish since ur not very familiar with area. Can murder sheepshead in February if u know where to go.

I would recommend at least one day with a guy. 3-4 days of pier fishing doesn't sound like much fun.

Thanks. Looking up sheepshead it says they're difficult to clean but pretty tasty. I'll have to look into it a bit more
Leaning towards just getting a hotel but anyone have recommendations on a cabin or anything? Rather not be that guy firing up propane burners in a hotel parking lot.

Get in touch with OB user Polar Pop, and head down to Delacroix.
Sit back and enjoy the entertainment.

Rent a camp and split the cost. Grand Isle is a good place to do that.

Honestly I'm just looking to get away for a few days. We can always head to Nola one afternoon.
Would I be able to pound a few beers from the pier or is that a no-no?

Sheepshead are delicious but built like a tank. Burned up more than one electric fillet knife in the past taking care of those jokers

Use kitchen shears to cut down behind the gills and then cut the ribs. After that it's easy fileting.

I've been told bow fishing is fricking amazing. Will have to check it out.

Thanks bud. I'll definitely remember that.

Great tip, I've been hitting those tough bastards with a meat cleaver, shears sound a lot easier but maybe not as fun

I'll throw in my vote for the Delacroix experience. There's a couple camp/lodges down there and guides to take you to do practically any type of fishing that you'd like. Check out Sweetwater. They do it all down there. Capt Jack runs a top notch guide/lodging business. It's less than 1hr to the French Quarter. 30 minutes from World Famous Rocky & Carlo's restaurant in Chalmette.

Judged looked that up and it says about 160 per night. That's a little more than if prefer to spent. Grand isle is showing 60 a night plus 35 dollar cleanup fee. Much more manageable.

Understand the $$$ factor.
I'm just recommending what I've personally experienced.
I haven't been to Grand Isle in over 25 years. (which is a damn crying shame!)

I've been wanting to take a trip down there for a while..just never really thought it through.
What kind of rod do I need to look for? i have a regular as hell one that I use for bass/catfish but I doubt it'll be suitable for something like red fish.
