Think I could trap town squirrels to build a squirrel herd at my house?

I've got about 500 20-year old oak trees in a patch out in my pasture. It's separate from any of the woods that surround my house. I've been waiting for years for squirrels to start getting in that patch but so far they haven't. Think I could trap some squirrels and relocate them out there and build myself a squirrel herd? My thought is to trap some town squirrels at various buddies houses. I would let them build up in population for a few years before I start blasting the shite out of them and sinking them in a gravy. Which is my ultimate end game. Squirrel trapping tips are greatly appreciated too since I'm a novice squirrel trapper. Tia

Plant a few trees right next to your house and in a few years they'll be pouring into your attic in droves. Then just set a trap on your roof and you're set.

Lord knows it's worked for me!

How in the hell do you not have squirrels already with that many oak trees? I guess squirrel relocation is possible, I just never thought there would be an area that needed it.
The only tree in my yard is a 7 year old live oak, and a few squirrels frequently use it. The little bastards love being on my house. They walk on the walls all around the house and leave acorn and pecan shells on the window sills.

Now rabbits on the other hand.........hmm, maybe we could trade.

I accidentally caught a squirrel in the yard not long ago. When I opened the trap he darted for the fence.

My granddad would trap them constantly to keep them out of his pecan trees. We used a standard live trap set with cracked pecans. He would catch 2-4 a week and haul them to my parents place outside of town. Like you, we had a bunch of oaks but close to the house. After a couple of years we were overrun with squirrels, even with me shooting every one I saw with my pellet rifle. We had so many Mom asked him to start taking them elsewhere.

When i was a kid we would make our own wooden box traps and bait them with peanut butter. We would catch squirrels within hours of putting the trap out. if we left them too long they would gnaw out of the trap.

How big is a 20 year old oak? My guess the reason they aren't already there is because they feel too exposed. Small trees with no cavities.

I think they are not there for a reason. Not optimistic about the chance of herd success.

Agreed. Once the trees have something to offer, the squirrels will come. They are like the catfish of the canopy, they spread everywhere. But if there is no reason for them to be there, they will leave.

Can't hurt to try though. A couple have a heart traps loaded with corn should catch them easy enough.

I think they just haven't found the trees yet. It's a couple hundred yards from my bigger woods to the oak patch. The tress are 30ish feet tall now. Here is the patch in question behind the house. This pic appears to be about 3 years old

Trees need some age on them and you also need a little more diversity in food for them.

If you really want to know you can do a suitability index and see what you score

Should be able to google sciurus niger suitability index and be able to figure it out from there

Are the trees making a decent crop of acorns yet? I know some types can take awhile. If there's acorns on the trees and the squirrels won't come then you sir have a hainted patch.

Squirrel relocation is possible. My wife's uncle traps fox squirrels from Oakdale area and moves them to his family land near Turkey Creek. They stay around. We've always done good there from year to year. Sorry, never trapped them myself so no pointers there.

I think the squirrels should have found your trees already. Have you seen any in the woods behind your house?

Yea, me too. Especially now with all the acorns. I think all it will take is a couple of them running the gauntlet from the big woods across the pasture to the oak patch and finding squirrel happiness. So far that hasn't happened.

Yes. Good squirrel numbers back there. Real thick and hard to hunt though.

I'm thinking the woods behind your house is just to good of a habitat for them, no reason to leave and come to your patch of trees.
