I've been looking for the new Springfield loaded black operator for a while but having trouble locating one in Houston, anyone know of a place that is carrying them?

As a proud owner of a Ruger lightweight commander, I vote for the Ruger as well.

Side note- my wife asked me what the big dea was about the 1911. I told her it's like holding the hand of God: it's big, powerful, and gives you a warm fuzzy feeling deep inside.

So back some time now my truck was broken into and someone stole my .45, a Springfield XD.

A truck gun safe is a slid investment and made for all trucks. Goes in the console.

Check out Remington R1 enhanced. It's a great gun and shoots extremely well.

Summed it up perfectly!

It's not just the trigger that sells me on the Ruger. It also has one of the sharpest sight pictures I've seen on a factory 1911. It has really nice Novak sights. Also has a very smooth stainless feel and the grip safety has a nice textured bump. It really is a great value. Maybe not a TRP or anything but it's a fraction of the price.

I also like that even the Commander sized Ruger still has a barrel bushing. I absolutely loathe bushingless barrels. They are a huge pain to disassemble. You do get a thick profile barrel but you have no way to take it apart unless you can capture the recoil spring.

Is it just me being lazy, but a 1911 is a PITA to clean.

Any particular guns you guys would recommend, any other makers I should check out while looking?

Taurus is the best bang for your buck. They are ugly and there are finer tuned ones, but those come at a price.

Have you ever reviewed a Rock Island? I've seen first time 1911 buyers pointed that way a lot.

I haven't had a chance to review or shoot one. But buyers I've met have been satisfied with them.

Foreign base model production 1911s will most likely have:

1. Mil spec features (spur hammer, thin grip safety, etc.)

2. Cheap finish

3. Looser slide-to-frame fitment (if any fitting is done at all)

4. Cheap sights

5. Heavy trigger pull

But if the question is "will they shoot?", my answer would be, "yes, all day long."

I'm also kind of in the market. I want one but I don't need another firearm least of all a $1500 1911 especially if I'm not that into it. They don't point particularly naturally for me but I really like them. I have an FNX 45 that I really enjoy and shoot pretty well. Relatively well anyway, I watched your review video and I don't shoot like that.

Anyway there are a couple of Smith and Wessons, Springfields and Colts that I really like to look at. And a Wilson Combat that I may trade my four year old for. But his mom would kill me so I need to make sure I like the platform....and shoot it well.

Given the price range you're looking at, I'd also suggest the Ruger 1911. Although I don't have one, they seem to be very nice guns. The next gun up on my "bucket list" is the Ruger Lightweight Commander. Like many others, the Commander series balances better than does the full size version. If there's any chance you may end up cc'ing the gun, I'd suggest getting the Lightweight version.

Yes, Rock Island makes a nice "entry level" 1911, as do Metro Arms/American Classic, Citadel and ATI (all made in The Philippines). I've got a Citadel Officer and an American Classic Commander and have been happy w/ them. OTOH, the price gap between a Philippines made 1911 w/ enhanced feataures and the base SR1911 is getting more narrow.

Another vote for the ruger but my carry and truck/carry gun is a colt special agent (3") with trench and Crimson trace.
