Elmer Keith was experimenting with hot .45 Colt loads when he blew up one of his guns. This caused him to start experimenting with the .44 Special and the rest is history...

I'm a fan of the 44 mag, but it's too much for me to handle.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 45 colt can be loaded just as powerful as 44 mag in Ruger black hawks, right?

It wouldn't be close to factory .44 Mag loads approaching SAAMI spec pressure. You can significantly overload .45 Colt in stronger actions like the Blackhawk or a Contender but even at 150% you are still far more than 10,000 psi away from .44 Mag. That and .45 Colt brass isn't built to take that much abuse.

The .45 Colt you get off the shelf in stores are normally really mild. I hand loaded for my blackhawk and got it around 1250 fps and was all I wanted to handle! It's nowhere near a .44 mag as Clames already said. The .45 Colt isn't to be taken lightly at any rate.

I've looked into a .460 Magnum which can run .454 Casull and .45 Colt. .45 Colt has a long history of hot rodding by handloaders but some overestimate how strong the case is. Even with modern brass alloys it doesn't have the webbing to handle the pressure magnums can develop with slow powders.

I want a .44 Mag, but I know it's probably too much for me.

You can always shoot reduced loads.

I kinda want a DE in .50 AE. Have zero practical use for one. I just want one. Plain black.

#Robocop

Years on the DE is still an impressive looking pistol.

Almost but not quite. The hottest .45 colt load online is running a 325 gr lead flat nose at 1,325 fps

The same company has a 340 gr +P+ .44 mag load that is doing 1,400+
