Since getting back into watching fishing, I have noticed a whole lot of bonefish shows. I just don't get it.

Trips seems like a lot of investment in time/money
No one eats them
They all look exactly alike
They don't appear to need to be tricked
100% sight fishing

Now, would I catch one if there? Sure.I just cannot imagine booking something like that, or wanting to do it more than once.

I've done it and booked a trip based on the hype you see on TV. It's pretty much BS. I would not do it again.

You know you have a bonefish shirt hanging in your closet...

If it's a tee shirt, it's folded. By me.

Booked at trip while in Belize a few years ago, it was ok. Won't do not again, would rather do other things while there.
We are spoiled in Louisiana for sure, give me some clear water, a platform and sunny skies and I'll show you a better time in the Louisiana marsh.

Agreed. I think it's just a bucket list thing for most and then they'll never do it again. I have no interest and would rather catch big Permit in the same waters.

-Traveling anywhere is expensive. Bonefish, permit, tarpon, all about the same $ wise

- Just because they taste like shite doesn't make them any less awesome to catch.

- I have never seen a redfish or trout that didn't look like a redfish or a trout. Not sure what you're trying to say here

- The people on tv edit out all the blown shots and missed hook sets. Bonefish are by no means easy.

- Sight fishing is fun. For the people who sight fish, watching someone throw a popping cork or live bait looks boring AF

As someone who fishes for bones once or twice a year, I think the hype is real. However, I would never pick up a spinning reel with a popping cork and go fishing for specs, so our views are very different. The idea of doing anything other than sight fishing has become so foreign to me that I have a hard time even imagining blind casting over and over again waiting for something to eat.

So you basically only fish for reds? Have fun with that while I load up the boat with specks, snapper, tuna, etc that can't exactly be casted "at".

Lump them all in this group for me.

All seems to be within 1 oz of each other. I've caught reds from 10 oz to 30+ pounds.

That's not what I'm saying.

I agree.

And remember, I said I did not get it. I did not say you should not enjoy it.

Loading the boat doesn't interest me. I'd rather sight cast a single redfish than catch a limit of trout. To each his own, right? I've sight casted tuna with a fly rod, it's not uncommon. Same goes for cobia, sailfish, marlin, and even mako shark. 14wt fly rods exist for a reason.

I'm not trying to spark a debate. I'm simply saying the idea of loading a boat with specs is completely foreign to me. No different than someone thinking poling around all day for a handful of redfish is silly. I've had days where I did not make single cast. It's no better or worse, it's just different.

Not everyone cares about loading up the boat every time. I have caught countless trout/steelhead/king salmon in the past year and haven't kept a single one.

The point is that 95% of fish I target can't be site fished most of the time. If you only like to site fish, you're missing out on a LOT of different opportunities IMO.

ETA: let me add that I do enjoy site fishing, but am not gonna limit myself to just that with all the opportunities I have in south LA. Trout fishing is boring AF sometimes and I agree that cork watching sucks when you're not catching consistently, but sometimes you gotta do it if you want fish in the boat. The more fish I catch, the better chance I have for a trophy hopefully.

Misunderstood what you were saying.

I'd agree that someone with that approach is missing out on opportunities. But if that's what really drives them...
