Tent Campers - What's a good recommendation for a family of 5?

Looking to get a tent that the entire family of five can use. What I've read so far is that one should get a tent in size that is equal to your family plus 2. So two people need a 4 person, 4 people need a 6 person, etc. So I'm assuming I'll need to get an 8-person tent, as I do not see many options for 7.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Not looking to break the bank but also something descent to invest in that will last in typical southern camping conditions.

I bought a big family tent Cabellas and it worked great for our little family of 6. Just go see what they have.

I like the REIs, I'm just wondering if I need the Kingdom 8. Some of the reviews say that sleeping 4 is comfortable if one expects to have room for gear inside. Our boys are small now (youngest fixing to be toddler), but for $100 more it may be worth it to get the larger tent for the long term investment.

If you are just car camping in mild weather, I always go for the bigger tent. Weight doesn't matter and you will be more comfortable with the extra space.

Go to bass pro or cabela's and get a 10 person tent. That way you have room for all the gear bags / cots etc etc

If your kids are toddlers the 6 is plenty. The 8 is too small for 5 adults. About right for 4 men.

Browning Bighorn . I went with this bad boy, family of four. Wife and I have queen size inflatable and boys sleep on twins each. Still enough room for gear. Has a great warranty backed by browning as well. Used it in Colorado and local lake camping. 8 person 10'x15'
ETA: Anything bigger and you may not be able to fit it on tent pads at campgrounds.

Personally, I double the tent size vs people using it when car camping... the weight is a non-issue and comfort/room is most important... you will have plenty of space for gear and won't have a problem with stepping on/over people for a midnight piss... just my opinion

Our 8 man works great for us and our 4 little kids but if they are older you may want to look at a bigger one or get a 2nd tent for the kids.

We have a Kelty 8 man and can get everything in it. My 8 yo daughter sleeps mostly in my old 2 man next to the big one now.

REI or check out Kelty as they always have good sales.

We have one of the Eureka Copper Canyon models. I don't remember the exact size, but it's one of the two-room jobs. It's enormous. One sleeping area. One floorless area for gear and sitting out of the skeeters. We like it.

Is this the one?

Looking at this one now, Cabelas has a special on these and I can get for $250. Regular price is around $400. Much cheaper than the REI and Big Agnes tents I've been looking at.

I have a magellan instant 9 person coleman makes a nice one too and probably a little more durable than the magellan. I would look for one of the instant types that have the permanently attached poles that you just extend and you are done. Either brand will be in the $150 range for a 7-9 man

That's a nice option but we're looking for one with a divider.

Gotcha. I bought mine for cub scout campouts and use it only twice a year. Now the boys want to sleep in their own single person tents so i may downsize.
