Teaching son to shoot

My 8 year old got his first rifle for Christmas, a Ruger 10/22. What do you guys think about open sites versus scope at his age? I've always taken the philosophy of learn open sites first, then move to a scope. What says the OB faithful?

Open sights first. Both my sons learned on a single shot bolt-action Winchester. They are grown now, but both are excellent shots with scope or open sights.

Open sights and limit the clip to three rounds at most till he learns gun safety.
Please drill that in his head and have fun with him.

the obvious---- be extremely strict on where he points the gun, loaded and unloaded.

Second that. Even the most experienced shooters can have a lapse in concentration or a mechanical malfunction if they shoot long enough. Muzzle control has saved many a life from an accidental discharge.

My 7 y/o nephew is learning muzzle/barrel, trigger, and safety discipline on a single shot BB gun. When he shows he has the discipline, he will start using my father's bolt action .22 to learn open sight. When bro-in-law and father feel he is ready, he'll move to my 10/22 with scope. That has been the general progression for several generations in my family (including me).

Remember don't practice dry firing on a run fire rifle it can ruin the firing pin. Where that is the best practice u can have when using a center fire rifle.

Thanks guys. He has had a BB gun for a couple years now, and I've been drilling safety into his head since well before he got that one. He was begging for a scope for the 10/22 as soon as he opened it, but I'm trying to tell him that being able to shoot well with a BB gun is different than with a real rifle. His birthday is in September, so if he shows me by then that he understands and can perform with the iron sights, then we'll move to a scope.
