So I've been perusing the LA Sportsman Classified adds pretty heavily and I've seen some boats I really like.

Has anyone bought a pre-owned boat from a non-dealer in LA lately? Is this accurate that I'd be paying 2% sales tax to the state of LA - found that HERE

If you wait until July of 2018 you won't have to pay sales tax.

Wait what?

Yes. It's 2% right now. Just bought a used boat.

Go to the main office in baton rouge on Mondays and they have a dept of revenue representative there so you can pay your taxes and get your registration all at the same time...

YOU HAVE TO BRING THE TAX FORM TO YOUR PARISH TAX COLLECTOR FIRST TO HAVE THEM SIGN THAT YOU'VE MET ANY TAX OBLIGATIONS TO THEM... (Should be $0 but still need to get them to sign it first before going to the state)

Edit to add: This is all part of John Bell Edwards new revenue raising plan that went into effect in April. It was 4% until June 30.

I'd be bringing the boat back to Texas for registration. I get credited the 2% for LA against Texas' 6.25% tax rate, so I only pay 6.25% total.

This sounds like a bit of a headache with Parish tax collector as well...I think this will take some extra research.

It is a pain, logistics wise. First, you have to determine who the parish tax collector is. In St. Tammany, it's the sheriff. But in others, they may have their own revenue dept. You have to take them the Registration Tax Form R1331 to be completed whether you owe any taxes or not THEN you proceed with the state taxes and registration by whatever means you wish (mail, in person, etc...).

Just bought a boat last weekend. Went to pay the taxes at the parish tax collector's office. He signed some paperwork and he said I didn't have to pay taxes.

You should never have to pay parish taxes on a civilian-to-civilian private sale on anything...

Lady at the sheriff's office told me there's rare exceptions to that rule though...

Bump.

If all goes as planned I'll be buying a used boat today. What is the total tax percentage I'll be paying on the boat? I see 2% state sales above. Is there any other taxes? Can I take care of all of that at the revenue office? Where is the main office mentioned above? The WLF office?

Should I claim a lower purchase price to reduce taxes? I'll be buying in cash fwiw.

First boat purchase TIA.

I can't help you with any of that, but what are you buying? Been cruising the classifieds myself for a 1756 aluminum CC.

check the link. If the boat was purchased from an individual,(considered an isolated or occasion sale) and not a dealer, between 7-1-16 and 6-30-18 then you pay no taxes. LINK

Anybody knows how it works with an out of state purchase? I just bought a used boat in texas and haven't picked it up yet but they said I had to pay Texas sales tax on it. Will I have to pay taxes twice?
