Puerto Rico or Key West? Trip will be 100% about fishing. Everything except the flight is cheaper in Puerto Rico. The guide in key west didn't seem that confident or it would be a no brainer.

They will probably be closer to Thousand Lakes/Naples by then if not further north.

I just want my dad to catch a big one. He has talked about catching a tarpon as long as I can remember. I just want to see it happen. The cost/ availability of peacock bass make puerto rico an interesting proposition. Fishing is about 200 a day less than in the US. Place to stay is about half the cost and flight is about double. The guide in PR also sounded more confident that we would catch at least 1 big one in 2 days of fishing.

Islamorada might work though.

If you wait till September or October they will be off Grand Isle.

Also fished out of Tampa a few times. We always hooked up on multiple fish. Look up Capt Matt. He fishes the schools off the beach and in the bay with live bait. So its not a snagging trip.

I would go to Puerto Rico just for the experience. Tarpon fishing in Florida can be kinda lame You are anchored down fishing looking at a whole bunch of other boats doing the same. On top of that, you can go right down the road to a pier and hand feed 150 lb tarpon all day long.

Scenery in Puerto Rico > keys

???

I've been tarpon fishing in the keys several times. Scenery is just as good as PR. And we were always poling the flats sight casting them (with live crabs on spinning tackle and with fly gear)

We've tarpon fished Punta Gorda for the last 10+ years in the spring and had good success most years. March-April being better than May. I don't think theres a bad choice to be made here.
Good luck.

Big tarpon?

He wants to catch a big one. If you can catch a big tarpon oolong the flats then do it

I have tarpon fished in Islamorada and we just anchored down each time staring at the bridge
