taking my boy dove hunting Saturday morning

I am so freakin excited. First off, I don't get to hunt much these days and was invited by my brother-in-law to join in a small dove hunt on his father's land. He just let me know they are seeing tons of birds so it should be a good hunt. Secondly, I am taking my 5 year old who, how can I say it, isn't exactly the outdoorsy type, much to my disappointment. I keep hoping he will start loving fishing and hunting like I always have. Ever since I told him we are going, he has been very excited about it and doesn't stop talking about it. We got him some camo and ear protection and I can't wait for Saturday to get here. I know its quite possible he will want to leave after the first few gun shots so we have a back plan so that I can keep hunting (my wife is going to and will leave with him and go hang out with my sister and her kids.) Anyway none of this really matters to any of you, I get it, but I am freakin excited!!!

Good luck. Good thing you have a back up plan, he may last longer knowing mama is there.
My daughter is 5. I plan on taking her on her first afternoon deer hunt this year. I'm going to wait for a nice crisp 65 degree November afternoon and slip in the stand about an hour before dark.

That's great. My son is only 5 weeks old and I already can't wait to take him hunting.

Nice. Hope yall whack em. My advice if you're planning on hitting the field early is let him hang with mama till 2:30 or 3. Then get him out there when the action picks up. My son will be on the trigger for the first time this opening day. He's pumped as well.

Morning or afternoon hunt?
Like Balls said if afternoon, bring him out a little later and let him be the bird dog. I started taking mine out when he was 2. He LOVED being the bird dog. He shot last year and this year he has his own gun. We went and shot some skeet and trap y-day. He did really well and we're pretty fired up about this year.

I started throwing skeet to Small balls a few weeks ago. The very first skeet he ever shot at he hit. The he proceeded to bust 6 more in a row before he finally missed one. He finished 8-10 on the first 10 skeet he ever shot at... with a .410 crack barrel. It was nuts. Since then he has cooled off considerably. He went 4 for 20 yesterday

On trap mine hit around 8 or 10 out of 25. On skeet (it was his first experience with skeet) he hit 2 out of 25.
They were moving pretty fast and after I notice on the skeet course that he wasn't getting his head down good he started hitting some.

Took my niece two years ago. Had dog out there too for entertainment. It was hot.
She had a blast "dad. Shoot the bird!! You missed! What are you doing!!!"
Anyways. It'll be fun. Just bring water and shade for him.
