Taking little ones fishing for the first time......

I have twin 3yr old girls and they've been asking me to take them fishing, but just want to make sure their first experience is perfect. I fish mostly saltwater, but figure we should probably start in freshwater.
How old were your kids when you took them for the first time?

18 months. Mostly just rode around and ate snacks.

Did that today with my three year old. Caught his first fish today.

take them somewhere where they can fish off a dock and catch a couple of bream each...it has to be easy and pretty much nonstop action for them to even last a little while at it...
remember, it is for them and not for you...if they decide that they would rather take their shoes off and splash in the water with their feet, that is what all of you need to do...
bring a small icechest with some juice boxes and drinks for them...
when they are ready to leave, pack it up...

City Park in NOLA or Waddil in Baton Rouge. Pick up some crickets, hooks, and corks and enjoy catching bream.

What spankum said. And bring live bait for them to play with(shiners, worms, crickets) and plenty of unhealthy snacks. Yoohoo, powdered donuts, etc

Have at least 4 poles rigged up when you start. The supply will start dwindling quickly and you don't want them waiting on you to untangle their gear.
My kids both started at 3 and we went to a pond to catch bream/catfish. Some of my best memories to this day - ENJOY!

Don't forget toys. Have started taking my 4 and 2yo on the boat regularly this summer. It has been a blast. They really don't fish much at all they bring toys and play however at the end of the trip they love it and have fun and ask to go back. The reason I mention this is best I can tell at that age the actual fishing doesn't matter that much to them just go and have fun!

Got my kid out in the boat at 18mo. She just hung out and ate crackers.
She is now almost 2 and we went to Hot Springs a few weekends ago. I got her a barbie rig, caught a few bream on it and let her try to reel them in.

Get them a small tackle box and put toy lizards and other stuff in there. They will want to play more than fish...and you've got a ways to go before they will be able to cast twice without getting hung up in a tree or needing some other assistance. Hope you weren't planning on getting much actual fishing in. It's going to be hot and they will get bored on the boat quickly. Essentially, whether you like it or not, fishing with a kid that age isn't about the fishing, but it can still be fun. I strongly advise to get a small rod and reel and put a few targets (5 gallon bucket, etc.) out in the yard and make them practice until they can come close to the targets before turning them loose with a rigged pole in the boat.

As soon as he could walk I took him in the boat. . Don't assume you will get to fish at all, this trip is about them, if they get bored, pack it up. Last thing you want to do is put a bad taste in their mouth on their first trip. Bring toys, snacks, juice, etc... I brought a sleeping bag and made a tent in the bottom of the boat for my guy to take a nap. Little Angler just turned 2.

Bring a little bag with some of their toys, lots of ice, and cheetos (they throw the ice and cheetos over board when bored). My 4.5 yo boy gets pissed if i go without him now. Im sure the 2.5 yo girl will be the same way.
Always bring worms for surefire action. I used to cast and set the hook for him. Now he can do it all himself.
Bring an umbrella or would be clutch if u had bimini top, its gettin hot out there now.
Good luck with the twins.

My powpow was a genius. He usually let me put the first bream/perch we caught in a 5 gallon bucket full of water. I would watch him swim around and feed it bugs I caught until it was time to reel in another. When it was time to go he would let me dump the bucket over and release my pet. I couldn't wait to go again next time, and he usually got a few solid minutes of fishing time too.

Took my 3 yo daughter this year for the first time. Bream fishing and it was tough with all the rain this year. She made it about 3 hours and I was shocked we were able to go that long. Got into a bed of them the last 30 minutes and she had a blast. Make sure to keep them cool, hydrated, and go for sure action. Even 3 inch long fish are fun to catch for kids.

My little boy is 19 months and if I could trust him not to jump overboard or destroy my boat somehow, I would definitely take him!

My daughter was probably about that age and the fun wore off after about 30 minutes. Every time she comes with me and her brothers it's the same thing so I won't take her farther than the wildlife management place about 7 minutes from the house or to a part of the Amite where she can swim when she gets bored with fishing.
I would try to bring them to a place that has other activities just in case.

Do they have any stocked ponds close to New Orleans? I thought about city park, but would rather someplace for sure fire action.

6 year old son will only fish if they're biting.
Otherwise, he'd dig through my tackle box and play with all my plastic baits
Just took my 7mo daughter out in the boat with the family, she enjoyed it for about 30 minutes, and slept the rest of the time
