did you mark a GPS location or area fished when you recaptured it?

Unless the ones I've tagged grew rapidly I don't think it's one I've tagged

That would suck carrying such a big tag, they should be much smaller for a trout. That tag is like the size of a marlin tag.

What area did u catch it in? If it was timbalier, lake raccouric, or leeville area it's a good chance it's my dad's he has tagged over 200 trout in that area this year.. It's the first year he has really tagged trout the last two years he has won top tagger for redfish. I'm not sure about last year but two years ago it was around 400 reds. You would be surprised how little those fish move most all the ones that get caught are less than a mile of where he tagged them. Last time I went with him we tagged about 50 school trout under some birds in the lake. The next day we went back out there and we caught two with his tags in them that we had tagged the day before. We would have never have know that without those tags in them. He gets about 5 letters a month from ldwf for people catching his tagged fish. It's a pretty neet program.

Not a CCA tag? That's a new division this year in the STAR tournament.

What's the point of tagging that many fish? That seems ridiculous

I don't catch that many fish I want to throw back. Nor do I care to tag every one I throw back. Especially if the bite is good.

thats really cool!
is was southern terrebone bay - not gona say xactly where. the tag had growth on it and i had to clean it off to read it.
my heart skipped a beat at first thinking how much fun i could have rubbing it in my buddies face being a 2x STAR winner. i won the cobia/ling division a few yrs ago.

We eat a lot and give a lot away but he fishes 4 to 5 days a week April to December.. Anything undersized gets tagged and if we caught good the day before we might go back and just tag not keep.. We tagged 80 keeper reds at the rocks of bell pass last month in one day.. We put the first 10 in the box and tagged the rest.. If you are catching fish and have tags why not tag them.

No, tags for marlin, sailfish, and swordfish are much larger and are designed to be intramuscular tags.
The small tag you see in the OP's trout is dart tag that has a small barb locked in between the fishes pterygiophores.
In any case, the tags are designed to be very light weight and when applied properly do not interfere with the fishes normal movement.

I don't agree. That tag is like 4" long, or looks like it in that pic. . Marlin tags aren't more than 6 inches. A 2" difference in tag size vs the size of a marlin/trout size is a huge difference. Again, the drag of that tag must suck.

Biologists get important data from fish tagging studies...growth rates, movement patterns, etc.

The Louisiana Cooperative Marine Sportfish Tagging Program is free to participate in. I'm surprised more "sportsmen" don't participate in it but I guess I shouldn't be...your average Louisiana fisherman is pretty ignorant.
