Ol lady needs a new car and wants to replace the ol 4runner. she is kind of adamant about not having a crossover. I know land rover gets its shite kicked in on this site regularly due to issues right after warranty/expense, but I've seen some of the certified pre owned on the site and they have 5 year 100k warranties on them.... kind of makes them an option?

She likes it and the 4 runner.... i'd guess the 4 runner is one of the best if not the best option in this segment. they all cost around the same. i'm doing research for a purchase in the next 6-8wks and i'm trying to get a idea of where i'm heading.

If you want something with some power on a solid chassis with a body-on-frame design, I am the proud owner of a 2010 Yukon Denali and can say it's been an exceptional vehicle for the two years I've owned it. Tons of power, quiet on the highway, smooth ride, did I mention tons of power?

Size?

I have a Sequoia and love it.
Look at the Lexus GX 460.

Have a couple of friends with the RR HSE sport. One loves his the other hates his. The one that hates it has had several problems out of it.

The GMC Yukon/Chevy Tahoe are some really good looking vehicles and the ride in them is pretty outstanding.

I can attest, we just got rid of my wives 2010 Denali. That 6.2 is a beast

Most SUV's are somewhat of a crossover. I am a big fan of the current explorers, but if I needed to tow or something, It would be the tahoe//yukon variety

My wife was absolutely sure she wanted a 4 runner until we looked at the new Pathfinders. Nissan really did a hell of a job on the redesign of the Pathfinders. You should definitely take a look at them. I was never a fan of the body styles of the old Pathfinders and wasn't familiar with the new ones. After taking one for a test drive I was convinced

Doesn't want anything big... absolutely hates driving my tundra. Don't think she'd like the wrangler.... i personally have an aversion to the jeep brand. had 2 grand cherokees.... not all that impressed with the "workmanship" of the jeep brand. the first had the most shite transmission i'd come across. had to change it twice. the second literally fell apart around me.... and changed the transmission on that one as well. maybe they are better now? those 2 were late 90s and i think a 2002 if i remember correctly.

I'm not worried about towing as i have a tundra. this is something that she wants and she kind of likes the idea of something unlike a honda pilot, mdx, etc...

The GX460 is basically a 4Runner except it has a V8 and full-time 4wd with a lockable Torsen center differential along with nicer trim. If she likes the size and quality of the 4Runner but wants something nicer and doesn't want to get a crossover, that's your ticket.

If you are considering a Rover, then you are already ready to pay that much. For the same money, why not get something quality (made in Toyota's best plant in Japan) instead of the maintenance and reliability nightmare of a Rover? You don't like Jeeps because they are poor quality (they are that), so why buy a Land Rover Discovery - one of the least reliable automobiles made - when you could get a Land Cruiser Prado (which is what the GX460 is called in the rest of the world), which is the basically indestructible conqueror of the deserts and jungles of the 3rd world?

You could strap a machine gun to the roof of a GX and successfully wage jihad for decades or buy a British car that will break down on the way home from the dealer.

the discovery is about 42-45k w/o buying a loaded model. looking to stay in that price range. the gx460 is 60k... thats a tad higher than i'd like to go. the reason why i was asking about the discovery is b/c its a newer design that has some features from being owned by the new company that now owns them. just questions really... also b/c they have the 100k 5 yr warranty... but if they really break down religiously then they are out of the question... again, questions

but thanks for the info.

My mom has a Honda Pilot and wife has an MDX. I didn't mention those because I'd consider them more of a crossover.

Both have been great. If I can't talk my wife into a Land Cruiser for her next vehicle she will likely get another MDX.

More along the lines of the crossover side of things. If I go the Toyota route I'm gettin a 4 runner.

I know I sound like a broken record by posting about my Land Cruisers in every one of these threads, but if you bought your wife one, you'd understand

QR drives a Land Rover Range Rover supercharged. It is absolutely unbelievable off road. It walks all over my F150 off-road on the powerline on my property. It wasn't even close when I did a test run in both. The locking diffs make that much of a difference.

On road it is an absolute monster. It has 510hp at the crank. I'm honestly not sure what it is getting to the wheels. It's fun as all hell to drive though.

I believe the nightmare stories of rovers are just like other horror stories from other manufacturers; they are just anecdotal. We have had zero problems with it through 40k miles.

Our range rover has been trouble free. However, it can't even walk down the street in the XC90 T8's neighborhood. That volvo is bad to the bone.

Rented a loaded Pathfinder this past week.

The interior and technology appear to be from the 90's. Underwhelmed.

Pathfinders are more of a crossover now anyway. I'd stick with the 4Runner, easily.
