take my two little ones for a 3 day weekend in Gulf Shores Aug. 18th through 20th. I plan on fishing, obv surf fishing comes to mind but perhaps other options. I know i'll be up at 5-530 long before the boys are up and moving so i'll try to get a few hours of fishing in.

Any advice on what to do to give myself a realistic chance of catching a handful? I have all the trout and redfish tackle needed from fishing GI/BL areas occasionally.

Thanks in advance for any/all information.

Get you some pompano rigs, pyramid weights, and some shrimps....If you can find sand fleas, try that too.

Guys at the bait shop will help you also.

I was a little east of there last week. I caught a million catfish, some stingrays, a couple of black drum, one decent redfish, and a pompano. That was over the course of a week, but I wasn't all that serious and I was just using my bass gear. I used sand fleas for bait with a pyramid weight and drop hook rig.

i fished the surf out by Fort Morgan for years. Krocodile spoon caught innumerable hardtails and bluefish, plus the occasional trout, redfish, and spanish mackeral. You can use jigs too. pompano with shrimp tipped pompano jigs. Early is always best.

Go to Little Lagoon and wade fish.

Park by Compass Point condos and walk into the lagoon there. The is a sandbar with a good drop off just north of their swimming pool. I've caught some good trout and flounder from that spot.

For flounder toss a white Gulp Swimming Mullet, and for trout and redfish throw a green hornet Matrix Shad.

Man if you can get a kayak and get out past the second sandbar with some live baits you'd be in business.

Otherwise the pompano rig suggestions are on point.

The last time I went to Perdido in August, there were ladyfish and whiting all in the surf in the morning, and the herons/storks/cranes/whatever knew it.

They stalked me. I had to keep my bait in the cooler, locked down. And I could barely reel in a fish without them trying to take it.

Once the sunbathers started coming out, the birds left. I thought "finally I can fish in peace" but then the sunbathers ran me off too.

Was looking over this exact spot from a condo and saw a boat fishing around that exact spot. The boat was there for a little bit so they must have catching.

Ralph at J&M Tackle will give you solid advise. He also runs a guide service, "Fishin Dixie," but I've never used him. Take his advise and you will catch fish.
