we're taking a charter trip out of orange beach over the holidays. others have told me that the captains don't like sunblock on their boats because it fricks up bait and makes the deck slick. any suggestions for something i can put on myself and the kids/grandkids that won't cause problems? or is it hats and sleeves all around?

Hats, sleeves and buffs/face covers. I even wear gloves now. I hate wearing sunblock while fishing because it always gets in my eyes when I sweat and makes me feel sticky everywhere.

They probably don't like the spray kind being used on their boats. But I have spent a lot of time fishing on boats and no one ever complained about people putting on sunscreen. If you are really worried just put it on before you get to the boat.

Yep. Last time I went out the only things they mentioned were no sprays and something about shoes. Non-slip and non-marking.

What about one of the sunblock sticks? There are wide ones available now that look like deodorant sticks.

They're not liquid or spray so you won't get it on your hands or the boat deck, and it tends to stay on better and not drip into your eyes when you sweat.

That's all we use on our youngest. Coat his face, arms, legs, and he wears a swim shirt. Never burned using that. The sprays, especially when reapplying, you are going to miss some spots.

I hate that stuff, but it does work well. I was cutting grass last weekend and that's what was in the garage so I used it. Nasty sticky mess going on, but it works great and stays in place. You just have the issue of it being on your hands and it is hard to wash off. Ours is the pink can. Water Babies.

As a world renowned ginger, the correct answer is Bullfrog Quick Gel.

That is good stuff and I use it on the boat. Never any mess. It's clear and evaporates like hand sanitizer. For kids the best regular sunscreen is the Pure Sun Defense Disney themed sunscreen 50 they sell at Walmart. No perfume to scare the fish. I use it myself. Nothing like pulling out a tube of sunscreen with a Disney princess on it to get the party going on the boat.

Bullfrog Quick-gel, put it on before you get on the boat. Hell i put it on before getting dressed. Once on, it's on all day. I never even reapply.

This stuff is awesome for keeping biting shite away while fishing. Just put it on before you go and wash hands with soap really well to keep bait alive.

The aerosol spray type is what they don't like. It can turn the vinyl and seats brown / yellow and makes the deck slippery. They shouldn't have any issue with lotion whatsoever.

Personnally I prefer the Coppertone Sport lotion, I've never had a problem with it feeling greasy. For kids we use Nutrogena Pure sunscreen - its great for on the face because it wont burn like some brands.

Consumer Reports did a study on the best sunscreens and determined that Trader Joe's SPF 30 SPRAY was the second best available behind some ritzy stuff for 10 times as much. If you have a Trader Joes go get some.

Equate sport spf 30 for the adults and the kids get pure sun defense spf 50 with the frozen characters on it.

Both lotions. Both top rated by consumer reports. You find them in walmart by the face care area not with the sunblock.

They are half the price of the other shite. That is probably why they are hidden in walmart.

Spent 5 days in galveston with kids 5,7, and 2. No one burnt.

I couldnbt believe how good the "pure sun defense" was for the kids. Thick and soaked in well!

Bring a small bottle of Dawn to wash your hands after applying sun screen. Everybody that fishes with live bait should always have soap on board. Sun screen will kill live bait in a heart beat.

Shoes, anything with black soles are a big NO NO on a boat. I used to buy some slip on beach shoes in different sizes for people that used to fish with me that I kept on the boat if they had shoes on that would mark up the deck. One of the biggest PITA is to remove marking off the deck.
