Okay,

I've never known what to call these fish, but I catch them constantly when in Florida in the surf. They're all up in the shallow surf in large schools cruising around. They have some yellow on their fins but they're mainly silver. They don't have a downturned "bottom feeding" mouth, and they swarm/follow just about any fly that's cast. Their mouths aren't generally big enough to get hooked on anything but smallish clousers. They're small, and they don't really put up a good fight. They're also the fish that swarm around your feet when out in the surf and peck at them.

I've been seeing this fish all my life, as they're the most common fish we see at the beach in the panhandle, but I've never known what to even call them. Help?

if you catch a ton of them a picture would help an ID thread.

Sorry for no pics. They look pretty close to the picture that mark65 took, though not usually so vividly striped. I think that's probably the general species, though.

Great bait but be careful with them as they will fin the hell out of you. Cut that big dorsal spike off too if using for bait

Spending 6 years on the Florida coast I don't think I've ever seen pinfish out in the gulf, I used to catch them in the bay all the time though. I know what fish you're talking about but don't think it's a pinfish. You are most likely talking about juvenile pompano or juvenile hard tails

Saw one caught last month. Neither I nor the guy that caught it knew what it was.

Catch them in bayou off Bay St. Louis all the time. I've also wondered what they were. Consulted saltwater and freshwater fish ID resources to no avail. OB to the rescue.
