I started back night fishing this year, and a buddy got me to throwing spinnerbaits. I usually just threw a texas rig, but with all the grass on Pickwick now spinnerbaits are the way to go. Well after paying 6.00 each for them only to have a pissed off smallmouth ruin them, or lose them I decided to get a mold and make my own. Used .035 wire and a #5 Colorado bladeand a Worth BB swivel on a 5/8oz banana head with a Mustad 4/0 hook. So far I am happy with the results. They come through the grass well and have a good thump. Last trip out our best 5 went about 27lbs with a 6lb smallie and probably 50 fish caught.

The double willow blade one I made with blades and beads from some old baits I had and it runs true and good as well. I may make a few of them for day stuff as well. I tied all the skirts, the whole deal takes maybe 5 mins total. Got cheap powder paint from Harbor Freight 5.85 a pound I think it was. Only colors they have are red, black, yellow, and white but that should cover 90% of what I would want anyway. All total I have about 1.25 in the single blade ones, and maybe 1.50 for a double.

That's awesome man, I would like to start pouring and painting jigs. How hard was it to round up the equipment? Where do you get your lead and supplies without spending an arm and a leg?

Those look really good.

Where are you fishing at Pickwick. My in-laws live on the river just outside of yellow creek where TN/AL/MS all meet.

The blades and swivels were from ebay, but going foward I will order them directly from Worthco The wires, hooks, skirt making tool, and mold I got from Barlows I got the skirt tabs and collars from spinnerbaitskirts.com

Lead is all over ebay or your local scrap yard should have it. I traded some baits out to a friend with the lead and pour pot for the first batch, but going foward will probably just get it at the scrap yard. 1.25-1.50 per lb is the going rate. Got a toaster oven at a yard sale for 5.00 to cure the paint, and made a fluid bed from PVC pipe for painting them. Plans can be found on the net for those and youtube has great videos for powder painting. A couple of friends said they would buy some, and two local bait shops said the same thing so I can recoup my investment rather easy, but just what I am saving will pay off for me. Next purchase is a Lee 20lb bottom pour pot for about 70.00 and maybe some more molds 35-40.00. Tackleunderground is a great place to read and learn.

I put in at Waterloo and usually fish from there to Pickwick Dam. Good fishing at JP Coleman all around the marina there. Had at least a 4 pounder each night we fished there. Main thing I am learning with Pickwick now after a 10 year hiatus is good electronics to find the offshore stuff.

That is cool as hell and I am impressed with the results. I do gotta throw in a word of warning about the lead though, make sure you do it in an area with good ventilation and away from kids. Lead vapor is really bad for the youngsters.

There's are some very nice fish over there. I use to fish it a lot but my wife and I normally send the kids over and we stay home.

I caught several 3-4lbs smallmouth on fly rods. That's some fun.

Yeah I am gonna do all my smelting in the driveway with a burner from the turkey fryer. I will pour down in the shop with doors open and I got some latex gloves to be extra safe.

You make 5/16? I'd love some if you ever wanted to venture into some business

I bet that was fun. It's odd, I am having to forget all my old stuff and learn the lake again with the grass now. It's a whole new experience but fishing has improved on the whole.

I looked at the Do-It mold site and didn't see anything for 5/16. My buddy has a 1/4 and 3/8oz banana head mold, same style head as mine pictured if that would interest you.

looks great shadow! You might shorten the blade wire a little to get the skirt and hook outside the blades, less fish lost to short strikes as they contact the blade first rather than the skirt/hook...

I have some that are shorter, been experimenting with the different lengths. That's what's good about making my own, I can make them anyway I like and if it's a dud, I can salvage the skirt, blade, and swivel and am only out a quarter. One of the ones pictured has a shorter wire, first from right on first two pics, third pic, top row, second from right.

Don't forget to try white spinnerbaits on a full moon. Have had some good luck with white instead of darker colors during this time. Pair that with a Indiana or even willow leaf blades and you got something that they may not have seen at night.

You ever made any buck tail skirts or do you just stick with rubber?
