What brand and series of generator should I buy for my house I'm about to build? Looking to purchase a 20KW for 3300 total square ft. What does the OB suggest.

There was a topic a couple of weeks ago on this very topic. Try searching...

I've had no issues with my 22w Generac over the last 10 years. However generally the OB gives them a thumb down.
+1 on search lot in that thread

Had my Generac NG since Rita....never failed me

Kohler or Onan water cooled. The lower the rpm, the quieter and better it'll be.
That really is an open ended question. It's kinda like asking what truck you should buy with no specifics.

I will be getting one installed in the next few weeks. After searching for a year I decided on a Cummings 25kw 1800 rpm liquid cooled. 3400 Sq. Ft. house. The company that will do the install tested my load "Amps" with me putting on each major appliance one at a time.
A 20kw would work only if I was careful with the 220v appliances and Ac units. Cummings Kw rating is using NG. You have to deduct 2-3 kw on other generators over the stated Kw when using NG.
I began by talking to two companies 120 miles apart who install both Cummings and Generac and both were dropping the Generac line. One was also a Kohler dealer and that would have been my second choice.

Just FYI, it's kW, not kv.

It's not the square footage -- it's the load at any one instant in time.
You can time A/C units to cycle sequentially (to ensure that more than one never cycles on at the same time), and get by with a smaller generator. You can still run multiple A/C units at the same time - just can't have them "kick on" at the same time.

I was just being a smartass. The poster said he had a 22 watt generator. Obviously he meant 22 kW.

I have the 22kw Generac. Love it. I have it set to run every Wednesday at 7am. The other day, the electricity went out and within 5 seconds I had total power in my house: lights, A/C, etc.

Heard a bitch/customer called crying that her generator came on off in the middle of the night and woke her up. Turns out they lost power in the area.

And given my IQ, it's not surprising that your comment went right over my head.

I did a ton of research and decided on a Cummins 30KW water cooled generator. It exercises every Tuesday morning at about 630am and it is about as quiet as an AC compressor.
Knock on wood, I haven't had to use it so far, but if I did I certainly would not hear it and the water cooled can run uninterrupted for much longer than the air cooled.

Just found the thread myself after a search as well. About to put one in on my house. But that thread has some serious misinformation. I echo what others said about many folks buying wayyyy too much generator. It certainly is required to run your home like the power never went out, but if you are careful about things like running an electric dryer while trying to run an electric stovetop, it's not a big deal. Certainly not for me since I have mostly gas appliances and water heaters. After Gustav I ran basically my whole house (3200 sq feet) on my 6500w Honda, including a 5 ton central unit. I didn't run the upstairs AC, but ran the fridge and freezers and the AC unit for 11 days. It had all it wanted, but it did the job. We just had to be careful about what we turned on and when.
