Om lots of boat trailers, stainless steel isn't.

Ehhhhhhhhhhh

Stainless is great and all, but not at all necessary in this application.

Well, I've had fits with this particular trailer from day one. I plan on ending that for my peaceful days if possible. Any drawbacks to them in your mind?

You can run whatever hub you want, the innards are what's really gonna matter. And in that aspect it really boils down to how good of a seal/cap you have. I found that dealing with rust is not that big of a issue compared to salt water interacting with the grease.

That's why we switched to the grease thru spindles to pump out the old grease since we found that our bearings and races were just fine.

Stainless galls up really badly from the oxide it forms on the surface (the reason it doesn't rust easily), so it's pretty shitty for threaded parts or press fit stuff. You might have problems getting bearings out in the future or taking off lug nuts if the studs are also stainless.

I wouldn't worry about it though. I don't think you've necessarily saved yourself much future headache but you definitely didn't hurt anything. Galled up stainless is no worse than rusted to hell steel.

That's what the new axle has, I'm looking forward to less worry hopefully.

Well, I run with that.
Thanks!

Grease-through is good stuff.

Of course, you have to keep grease in there.

Well they'll be in the same condition in 20 years that they are now.

Stainless is good stuff.

Wishing I might be.
Thanks again, I'm already in, was just looking for some input.

Sorry. I nerd out on this kind of stuff.

A stainless I beam trailer would be badass. It would cost as much as most boats but it would be really badass.

There are lots of "grades" of stainless. Some of the common components on boat trailers are not what most people think of when talking about stainless steel.

e.g. Stainless fenders will rust like a SOB if you get acid on it (like the Star Brite stuff sold to clean fiberglass hulls).
