Most of you winter grasses and broad leaves should be just about dead by now. Need to know what weeds you're dealing with.

I don't ever think there is a good time to "weed AND feed". Rather, there is a time to kill weeds, and when they are no longer there to rob available nutrients from your turf, then put out the "feed".

The weeds are not really a huge problem anymore. I spot treated them back in early April. I'm having trouble with some spots that don't seem to be filling up with grass. Some spots look great and some look almost dead. I'm thinking these are low spots that hold water and are drowning the grass. I'm not sure though as this is my first yard and I've only been here a little over a year. Would you recommend just fertilizing the grass?

Here is a pic of a spot that I'm having trouble with.

Bootlegger

Have you ever known msma to be effective on virginia buttonweed? I'm asking because I sprayed 2 weeks ago mainly for crabgrass but I also had a fair amount of VB. Msma I didn't think would touch it but to my surprise it smoked that VB. I mean it looks so bad I don't see it recovering.

Yeah, that looks like root rot due to saturation. I don't see a defining line, but I wouldn't rule out fungus. Bad thing is, fertilizing will only make a fungal problem worse. Try building up with some fill sand, or see if things improve now that we're not so saturated.

That's what I thought. I will go ahead and get some fill sand and level it out. I've been meaning to do this anyway because the yard has a lot of uneven bumps in from the sod not being properly installed. Thanks for the help.

Sure haven't. MSMA targets grassy weeds, not broadleaves. But very interesting to hear!

Same problem here within my backyard in regards to over saturation. Will be hitting it with some fill sand soon.

Is it better to do a mix of sand and topsoil/planting soil or just go with pure mason sand to level it out?

Sand and topsoil would probably be best, but pure sand is easier to work with usually. Unless you have some really good #1 topsoil.

I see this Weed Free Zone stuff says not to use above 85 degrees. Have I waited to long? or can I add in early morning hours with pending rain? Thanks a bunch

That precaution is mainly to prevent collateral damage to your turf. Mix cautiously and expect extra yellowing on your lawn.

I don't get it when Dan Gill keeps telling homeowners to use river sand. River sand has tons of weeds and sometimes torpedograss. I usually add Milorganite over the Mason/coarse sand because of the slow release rate and it's organic nitrogen and won't burn. Good info Boot.

If you can get true pump sand straight from the bottom of the river, you can usually be free from any weeds...usually.

Boot, what is the best way to control torpedo grass. It is all over my flower beds and pops up daily. I got some granular stuff from the nursery to spread, but I wanted to see your suggestion.
