Spring break beach camping trip

Are there any good locations for beach camping on the gulf coast that y'all know of? Every time I search for one it brings me to BS RV parks and resorts. All I'm looking for is somewhere to pitch a tent and maybe have a bathroom and shower, not a resort with a pool or a beachfront cabin.

Grand isle state park
They allow golf carts on the beach not so I'm sure you could camp outside the park too (no shower that way)

Fouchon beach. 
I like topsail park near Destin. Good fishing. Quiet beaches. Often times you can find more fish than people in the surf.

What about these? Sort of like souped-up camping. Gulf state park Alabama.

I'm looking into a bunch of those state parks now. The websites show that every single site is booked for every day from now until mid-April. I don't trust that so I'll make some calls tomorrow.

I'll check into that too. Gulf State Park is one of the ones showing reservations all the way through April.

There is a crap load of yankee snow birds that spend winter their RVs in the Gulf Shores area. I was down there in January.

Fort Pickens is exactly what you're describing. Plus it's near Pensacola and you can watch the Blue Angels train.

The texas coast line south of corpus christi extends for 30 or 40 miles of easy driving.

Fort Pickens National Park is on the western end of Pensacola Beach and across the intercoastal from NAS Pensacola. Primitive camping is available. Really cool place. Be aware that the road in & out can & does wash out if a big enough storm comes through. They will evacuate the park if a storm like tonight's is rolling in.

As others have said Santa Rosa/ Fort Pickens is exactly what you're looking for. We've been going every spring that the campsite has been open. The campgrounds are fully restored and improved after Ivan wiped the island out years ago. Beautiful pristine beaches with few people around. Fort Pickens night/ghost tours are fun, and waking up and you can wake up early and watch the Blue Angels practice over Pensacola Bay.

My girlfriend stayed at Fort Pickens last spring break and was recommending it. Their website says they're also full for months, but they'll be first on my list to call to make sure.

I grew up not far from North Padre Island National sea shore (Near Corpus Christi, TX). It was awesome but very primitive.. You have to bring in everything you need and they won't allow you down very far without 4 wheel drive.

Camping is allowed on the eastern side of Ship Island, off the MS coast. It's about a 15-20 minute boat ride from the dock. There are people that make it out there in kayaks, but it's obviously going to take a little longer to get there if you go that route. We plan to camp there at least twice this spring/summer. I hear the bugs are really bad at night though.

I keep thinking about doing this. Or one of the other islands. Have heard about the terrible bugs so that's not very motivating. Something about being sure to setup camp on windy side helps keep them at bay I've heard.

Good advice to keep in mind. I'm really hoping it stays windy wherever we set up shop, which will likely be on the far eastern side. I'm guessing there isn't going to be a ton of fire wood out there so I'm going to bring fire logs. It's a 2 hour ride from my house to the dock and a 15 minute boat ride to the beach...probably another 20-30 minutes of scouting to find a decent spot. I'm hoping to spend a few weekends out there over the course of spring/summer/fall this year.

Actually I read that there is plenty of driftwood to use for fire. But I suppose if you are in a motorboat there is no harm is taking a bit of firewood.
If we go it will probably be in a kayak so obviously no toting wood for us.

Hadn't seen that and didn't know there was a pier on horn island. I'll definitely do some scouting out there as well. Last year was my first time out to the islands and I'm trying to get as much info as possible. Thanks

Update: everywhere from here to Pensacola was booked, but we found a place right off the beach in Panama City, so we're in! Thanks guys!
