Spreading River Sand Tips

Going to get 8 yards of River Sand this weekend and spread it my front yard to level it out, and to increase the height of the lawn. Any tips or things to watch out for? This is my first time doing this.

im considering this as well. how much is the sand going for per yard?

I got 8 yards for $140 a month ago. River sand will be full of weeds so be careful. Another warning if you have pets is that river sand will bring fleas.

Got a quote for $200 for 8 yards. Yeah I have a dog that I let outside just to use the bathroom. How long do the fleas stick around for?

We've sprayed 3 times already and our 6 month old Mini Aussie is still picking up a few here and there. We have a few feral cats in our neighborhood that are part of the problem as well. We have a giant litter box for them with all the new sand. I started taking care of that problem with traps last week with tremendous success. I'm going to get some nematodes to help with the fleas as well.

Soaking it in diesel and setting it on fire (even if you spell out expletives with the diesel) will not kill all the weeds in the sand.

i got several loads of river sand when i built my house. the first year it popped up the most luscious bermuda grass this side of Augusta National.
The next year it was completely taken over with weeds, and it hasnt recovered since.

Spreads out nicely, full of nutrients, but the torpedograss...tough to fight

when you say "river sand" do you mean "river silt"? who is supplying it?

Decided to go with top soil instead, due to fear of fleas and weeds.

River Sand spreads and levels itself but you need to help it a little.
easiest way to level it is buy a 8ft 2x12 and tie a rope to each end and then walk it (don't use lawn mower or the wheels ruin what you are trying to do) dragging it behind you. the rope lets you steer it as you walk to direct where you push the sand.
the weight and length of the 2x12 spreads it out evenly filling in any low spots with ease. when you are done, set out a sprinkler system and this will compact and finish helping the sand fill in any low spots. while the sprinkler is running go return the 2x12 to the store and get your $15 back you paid for it
often I will throw rye grass seed over the sand to form a quick root system so it stays in place and the rye grass makes your grass grow in faster because the root system helps keep the sand moist

I use mason sand. No gravel like coarse sand and it is inert. Add some Milorganite after you have a rain or two.

Was going to do the same thing. Is there something you can spray on the riversand to kill the fleas as soon as you have it in place?
