Me and some buddies had a debate last night. Do the specks get more specks as they age and grow, or do the specks get bigger/more spaced out, with the number staying the same? Google gave me no answers.

The biggest specks I have caught in my lifetime tend to have fewer spots. I believe the spots act as camo for juveniles and these tend to go away over time.

I agree that they disappear, anything over 20 inches has way less specks

Yep. They either fade out or spread the same amount over a larger area. They definitely don't multiply.

I see a lot of guys post pics of their 28" speck and it is covered in spots. Gotta think their excitement got the best of them. I've never seen a big speck that has a lot of well defined spots.

I've seen really small speckled trout that I thought were whites at first till seeing just 1-2 specks on them.

I caught a 13" speck last weekend that I thought was a white. It only had specs on its dorsal fin
