Something interesting from Spear Boatworks
Posted by Barf on 9/2/16 at 8:38 am10
Harry Spear is an important figure in the shallow water skiff building as well as one of the most respected guides in Florida's history. I won't bore anyone with a history lesson so on to the boat...
He builds a boat called a Glades X that's 17'6" with a 62" beam at the transom, 70 inches at it's widest. Rated for 30hp.
He is now building a chopped down version of this hull. Rolled gunnels, no top cap, and shortened decks for more cockpit space. Rumor has it this new hull is priced under $8k.

What hp is the smaller one rated for?

That is sick. I love the minimalistic boats with a bench, open floor and a deck
Taking delivery of a new Gheenoe classic in 2 weeks with that same layout.

Very cool little boats. I wish I saw more of them. Might be the ultimate budget cast and blast machine.

Yep. A 1994 15hp Johnson 2 smoke I found in my grandmas garage

Yeah I'm excited for it. Should be able to fish all my kayak spots without having to paddle

$8k for just the hull on the shortened version?
That's what I am being told. The hull is not shorter, the decks are shorter. Without a top cap and structural support of the decks the lay up changes. Less does not necessarily mean cheaper.

I'm gonna wait a few years and build a Cayo
A friend of mine is having a Cayo 173 built. It's a damn nice boat. I've had a bunch of hells bay skiffs and I shite you not, the attention to detail on the Cayo is every bit as good as HB. It doesn't come cheap either.
Get in now if you want a boat before the end of 2017

Curious to see the 18' they're building at the momen
It's a beamy boat at 77 inches. Good beach side tarpon skiff. Nice balance between taking the family out to the sand bar and being able to pole. Should be fast.
