I was on my way home from working my shift at the honey island range...on my way out this hound was running down oil well...

Called the owners name on the tag...it had two phone numbers...it was an old collar from when the owner and a friend shared a prize Coon hound...the friend answered...said he knew the owner and would pass on that I found the dog...

Called second number...was the owners mother...he lives elsewhere...said he didn't have a phone but would call his girlfriend that picks him up from work everyday...left my home phone number and proceeded to take my son to LSU games for the weekend...

Guy calls my wife...dogs been missing since February first...

Claims she's a hog dog he lost all the way over in pearlington,MS

Guy says he trains and sells these kind of dogs all the time(friend verified) but he just sold her litter of pups and has six other dogs and a pregnant girlfriend, and since I told his friend that if the owner for some strange reason couldn't keep her for some reason(since I knew he had no phone even) that I'd be willing to try to keep her...

Guy honestly doesn't want the dog back I guess due to hardships...

Beautiful friendly dog but was never house broken...owner said she was always kept on a chain outside or locked in a crate...

Not sure if I can housebreak her...

Some people only look at their dogs as tools and would kick em to the curb quick like this guy seems to be doing...Some just don't deserve a dogs affection...

What would the OB do?

PS Daughter bathed and fed her...she's inside now, and has peed on the carpet once , so she is now in the dining room where there is hardwood floors...

Some people are worthless. I would foster it until I found it a new home.

Does the owner's number end in 7689?

I swear I returned that dog to him once.

Pep a friend of mine takes in abandoned dogs all the time. Has about 20-30 we hog hunt with. I'll gladly see if he would be interested. Email me some more details and I'll see him Sunday

Odds that the dog will adjust fine to your home are high...

If you have the time keep her. She would be a great dog.

House training wouldn't be hard. Praise her when she goes out and correct her when she messes up.

If you want to keep her do an Internet search for "kennel training". Should only take a couple of weeks to house train. If not, CAAWS in Baton Rouge is a great organization.

A full grown hound will be tough to house break. It's doable, but it takes some work. They're hard headed. Good luck My coon dog is pretty well house broken for a coon dog that lives outside.

Can't ever trust a person like you'd trust your dog. My damn dog came from the pound and he's smarter than I've ever seen any dog and listens better than any dog that someone spent $10k on. Keep the dog and train him right. I can bring my dog out to the range and show you how well behaved a dog should be. You are now that dog's go to man

Never forget the time I had a skin and bones beagle shadowing me through the woods. I tried my damn hardest to get that dog to come to me (don't even like or want a beagle). It was so skittish and scared, I couldn't even get the fricker to come over to me. In the end, I had to end up driving off and leaving him. We were about 3 miles from any building, and maybe 5 from houses. Always wondered what happened to that guy.

On the flip side of that, my dog doesn't run off. He's constantly checking where I'm at when he's going off and doing dog things. Seems like you're gonna teach this dog that trick. It'll be a tough road, but just remember that negative reinforcement works well with dogs. They'll be 100% committed to you if you so it right. That plus those nasty arse Pepperidge Farm cookies ??. I mean, what kind of weirdo likes those things and 17 mags?

Blue ticks are smart. That will be a good dog if you give it the basics.

I'm sure the dog can be housetrained, but it might take a bit of time and patience. Great job on the rescue.

I'm not home to observe, but the wife checks in with me from time to time...

She says Belle(thats what the previous owner said her name was) is very relaxed and comfortable and spends most of her time sleeping on the bed my wife made for her in the dining room...she friendly with the my daughter and her friend that slept overand when they call her and go into the back yard, she goes right to the grass and pees...she actually gets along well with my 8 yo lab which is unusual cause she's been getting grumpy with younger, more energetic dogs...

Wife has an appointment with the vet for 1:00 as she notice a little something wrong with one of her pads and that she favors that leg just a little...probably tore a pad on the journey from Pearlington all the way to near the shooting range...

We'll see where this pups journey is headed...hopefully for good times.

Many of you remember our sixteen year old lab back passed away in June...

Oddly enough...Her name was Belle...maybe it's a sign to stop the grieving.

My son thinks it too soon and choked up when we talked about it, I think time will tell...I also think this is just what he needs.

Sure is Dusty in here.

I don't believe in coincidences, so yea I definitely think there is a reason why you crossed paths with this pup. Good Luck!

Pep, I had to treat my Sheba-dog at about 3 years.

She did well, but when she was about 13, she had to have a pacemaker due to low heart rate.

She did well for about 3 more years after that.

Sounds very similar to the way we found our dog. Wife was driving in the country and noticed a puppy next to the woods. There was a small aluminum foil bowl of water and another one with a small amount of dry dog food in it. There were not any houses near by. This was in the woods. Went back later that day and got him. 10 years later the dog is still living a cush lifestyle as our pet.

I would say the dog you found hit the jackpot too.
