I need to get a couple of new snapper rods. All mine are at my camp currently and I can't remember what I normally buy (haven't bought one in about 10 years). Anyone have any good suggestions? TIA

Although i haven't actually put them to use yet i just picked up some Penn Blue water carnage jigging rods and paired them with Fin-Nor Lethal 100 spinning reels. The rods are rated for 80-130 lb line and are really light. I figured the spinning tackle would be easier to use for the crew i will usually have with me. I still have a couple of Penn 330gti level wind reels that will get the job done as well but they are nearing the end of their life and will be replaced soon.

Reels, can't go wrong with Penn 330's. Even if someone that never fished before can handle it. Rods, Penn Mariner in the 30-50 lb class. Spool it with 50lb class line.

Spin cast Love the old school penn 6500 for snapper with 65lb power pro on a 7' rod. Out standing to pull out mangro's with live croakers out the rigs. Also outstanding with poppers for dolphin. Kind of lite for any tuna other then blackfin.

Oh, best fish landed with a 330 was a 12' bull shark on the lump. My son landed a 75lb YF tuna off one too snapper fishing!

I like the ugli stick tiger lite series. I have one on a tld15 and it's perfect for snapper.

I also have a couple cheap spinners. 6000 fierce with a 7 ft pen power stick for the ladies and noobs.

Shimano Tekota or Torium reel paired with a vertical jigging rod is a nice set-up for snapper. Or a Penn SpinfisherV or Shimano Baitrunner if you'd rather go spinning using a jigging rod.

My current favorite rod is actually a beefed up salmon rod (7'9" heavy action, 15-40# rating) paired with a tekota 700 and 50# Power Pro depth hunter. Super light-weight and sensitive for when the magroves and smaller snapper are light-biting but plenty powerful enough to handle some bigger fish. I've caught several 50#+ sharks on it with no problem.

This rod: Wright & McGill S-Curve Back Bouncer (Grey, 7-Feet 9-Inch) paired with this reel: Shimano Tekota 700 using this line: PowerPro Depth Hunter Multi-Colored Braid - 333yds. - 50lb

I go with ande med heavy stand up rods, tekota 700, 80lb braid

tekota is the best snapper reel out there

I've always found boat rods to be overkill for snapper. They're tough to break and last a long time, but I find myself preferring lighter, longer rods for snapper fishing.

PENN Bluewater Carnage Conventional Jigging Rod - I would go with the 6'6" one

Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger Lite Jig Casting Rods - I would go with the 6'3" one

Shimano Trevala Butterfly Jigging Casting Rods - I would go with the 6'6", 30-80# one

All of those rods paired with the Tekota would also make good blackfin rods as mentioned before as well as mahi popper rods.

ETA: Lots of companies make that type of rod but I only linked ones under $150 that came with a gimballed butt because I hate fighting big fish without a gimballed butt. Most of the time with snapper it won't matter, but if you do hook a YF while jigging or a big dolhin on a popper, you'll be very glad you have the gimballed butt.

Tekota 600. Not for YF (well ideally anyway), but it does fine on mahi. Caught one around 25# over the summer on one no issue.

18# max drag and 500+ yards of 50# power pro. No issues with that at all. I usually use spinning gear for throwing poppers, but it's nothing the Tekota can't handle.

That just doesn't seem like an ideal topwater set up IMO. I own a tekota 700 and just couldn't see using it to sling poppers. Perhaps the tranx has spoiled me. But I'll give it a shot next time I'm out there.

Yeah I realized after I initially responded that I have the Tekota 600. It's a MUCH smaller reel than the 700 (16oz vs 29oz). I agree, the 700 would be difficult to cast really anything with.

Yeah, sometimes jiggin can be a pain with that 700. But I've caught damn near every fish that swims with it. Very good reel for what it is.

I like the 600's the are a great all around reel but God help you if you hook a nice tuna (speaking from experience)

yeah, I've caught a few decent blacks on mine, and it was all it wanted. I couldn't imagine a good yellow on it.

Any of you use the penn squall level wind reels? I am thinking of getting a couple to replace my broken 330 gti's
