Buttermilk racer is the correct term. People call them blue runners though

So I should have killed it? What's the ruling on them?

The color pattern threw me off. I haven't seen a racer in years, and that one was hauling arse across a gravel road.

Only snake I've ever encountered meaner than a diamondback water snake.

They're harmless. In addition to rodents, they also eat other snakes, including venomous ones, if you like that sort of thing.
