Found this guy swimming and floating in the pool. Appears to be a water snake, but wanted to get some expert opinions before I release a venomous snake.

Neither if I had a choice. Lots of kids running around.

Curious on how you guys are identifying as water snake though - does the tail give it away or the shape of the head?

I found another one last week but it was already dead since it was caught in some tape from an amazon box - another baby.

Corn snake. Save perhaps sell for $$.

Eta: shape of head and tail and overall shape is easiest to tell at a glance but not foolproof. Shape of eyes is good if you are close enough.

Save and give your kids a show and tell. Show them the difference between non venomous(your snake) and venomous, get pictures from web.

Storeia Dekayi, or brown snake. (Bottom right pic in link is closest to your little guy.) They don't get very big, and they're harmless.

Because that's what this particular snake looks like? Shape of head & pattern usually help with IDs.

Almost stepped on a baby King snake yesterday on the patio. Yes, it made me jump a little.

Let it live for another day.

He was just trying to make sure your ticker is still working.

(That's a good thing, given your condition! )

I had a king snake slithering around the yard when I was mowing the other day, the first 5 or so times I let it go on it's way. Finally I got tired of it crossing my path so I ran it over.
