Had a 686 357 mag 4" 20 years ago, sold it, shouldn't have. Anyone have a Model 629 .44mag.? Is it a beast to shoot?

Depends on the barrel length. A 6 inch gun isn't bad but a 3 inch with 240gr loads isn't fun to shoot past about 6 rds.

I had this exact gun in 44 mag. I bought it at an auction because it looked cool and only paid like $150 for it. I sold it to a friend for $350 because it was no fun to shoot. The wow factor was there, but it got old quickly.

Don't own one, but have shot one many many times. Of course it's a beast to shoot. Holding it for the first time was like shaking hands with George Washington himself. Everytime I fired it, an eagle screeched in delight.

Shooting it brings you to a wonderful place where Miller Lite flows down waterfalls and the sexy women don't wear any clothes. I'm not saying it will give you the same freedom boner it did me, I just recommend not wearing tight pants.

This all day. Fortunately kept mine (paid $400 for a rare 3" from the early 80's) but Smith's are getting expensive as hell. New semi's are coming down in price. The classic wheel guns are going up. 629 will cost you quite a lot especially if you find a no dash w/ a pinned barrel (which will be worth a mint).

My dad has the Ruger SBH in 44mag with a 7.5" and also a 629PP. I've been shooting them since I was around 15 and 140lbs. The SBH twists like crazy when the bullet exits, the 629PP is fun as hell but it's ported to take some of the muzzle rise out of the equation. I highly recommend a 44Mag!

ETA: I remember using one of them on a plate rack at honey island, the 45ACP knocks down the plates. The 44Mag plows them down with authority.

Well Double the Trouble's response is a tough act to follow, but to summarize: yes it's not too bad. I have the .44mag with the longer barrel and wood grips and you can blow through a box of 50 rounds without hating yourself too much. Is it as fun and easy as a box of .45 through a 1911? No, but it won't have you developing a huge recoil flinch or anything. Buy one.
