the P226 was designed to be 9mm while the P229 was designed for the 40/357 sig. although that wouldnt be a deciding factor, I would take that into consideration. For me, it would come down to its purpose.

If I plan on conceal carrying, I go with the 229, if not, I go with the 226.

Just my .02

I have the 229's older twin brother the 228. Too big to carry concealed. Not really full sized. If I had it to do over again I would go 226. If you are going to get a big gun might as well get a full sized for the added benefits.

I don't think hand size matters. The only 2 issues will be:

A. Which one is more comfortable?

B. Are you ever going to try to carry it concealed, at all?

A. should be the driver of this choice, but if it's close, then let B. break the tie (and get the 229 if it's "yes").

Full disclosure: I own 1 of each and am converting the 229 to 9mm with a Bar-Sto barrel later this year.

Meh - I carried an M9 (92FS) concealed - a lot (you don't want to know about it).

Not ideal, but the 229 is "more" concealable, all other things considered. Certainly there are better choices (the P239 for example ).

Make sure do some dry firing. You will fall in love with the triggers.

Yeah...I already carry the P239 in .40 but it lacks capacity

also want it for my son to use in Point shoot competitions...He hates the P239 in .40, but loves my 1911 in .45

we've been playing with different scenarios where larger cap mags are needed unless you want to lose time on a mag change.

I was thinking P226 enhanced elite for the ergo grips and little more weight to keep recoil down some, since I don't reload and can't tone down the loads any for him.

only problem I don't like about the enhanced elite in either of them is the obligatory beaver tail...

has anyone found a beaver tail to be a problem when concealed carrying?(if I go 229)

I wouldn't get a beaver tail unless you really want one. The standard (I guess they call it the Nitron now) comes with the E2 grips. I would get that or the Mk25 in P226, if it were me. I have a standard P229 (in .40) and a newer P226 "standard" (Nitron). The standard P229 I have has the old 2 piece panel grips (like the MK25 or the P229 M11-A1).

I didn't think I would like the E2 grip, but it's grown on me.

I fondled this one today and it was a little too thick for my comfort...

that is the reason I'm looking at the enhanced elites, they have the beaver tail but the grips seem to be more ergo than the MK25

As much as the OB hates Jim's, they have an enhanced elite in both 226 and 229 and I may make the trip just to check comfort vs. the mk25 or standard models in both

NVM - I see that you're talking about doing a direct comparison with all.

I'm 90% sure you can put the E2 grips on a Mk25 if you decided to go that way - that would be the top of the mark gun without the extended beavertail and you would then add the ergo grips.

Yeah, I really need to verify if the E2/ergo will fit the non elite models(or models that didn't come with them)

Also: Is the Grip size (non E2) thickness and length identical between the 226 and 229?(still haven't held a 229)

I can't say for certain. I don't have a P226 with the standard 2-piece handle. However, has to be close as a 229 can accept 226 magazines.

ETA: Although we're talking about all metal guns here, it really is similar to the difference between a Glock 17 and 19. For me, the P229 is a little better balanced, but a compact gun is almost always going to have that edge over the full size.

Legion P226. One of my favorite guns. Bruce Grays trigger in the Legion is worth the price of admission for me.
